What did you rehang today?

Been too long since I've had anything to post in this thread. Left to right same type of handle I started with, fresh from the shop 1 1/4 lbs Kelly Woodslasher, and a Mann Edge 3/4 axe for comparison.

Very nice. From the side that Kelly looks like a Swedish head, from the top it's all American. Love the handle on the Mann.

I got this Collins Connecticut off a popular auction site. It had an owners name written in magic marker really big on the 32" handle. Nobody else bid so I got it cheap. I just had to remove the head and sand off the name and smooth out the rough spots.

Love the Collins Connecticut. You did a great job on it.

This is a near perfect Flint Edge boy's axe head that I have been saving. I hung it on a Link handle that I got a a yardsale yesterday. I did not remove the finish, I fit the handle as found, it was in great shape. I sharpened with files. It will currently scrape fingernails but not shave arm hair.

JB that is a great looking tool. I enjoy seeing well-hung, file-sharpened axes and you seem to be doing that consistently – thank you for sharing your work.

Jblyttle,

That flint edge came out great, I'd say the handle is worthy of the head as well. I wish I could find handles that could be used without hours of work reshaping them. Do you happen to know if the current links are the same?

I've had good luck. Check out your local Ace hardware, or Amazon and take a chance on one.

Plumb DB reversible for a buddy.

I like to finish the head and haft separately and then bring the finished pieces together. Head is sharpened and waxed. Haft is shaped and has 2 coats of BLO plus 4 coats of tung oil.

Just after trimming the wedge. Only DPG on there now. It's soon to get a few coats of BLO on it.

A few irregularities in my spokeshave work.

Could have used a little wider haft. This is an excellent piece of straight-grained white hickory from Tennessee Hickory Products. I took the handle thickness from 1-3/16" down to 13/16".

Edit: meant to add this. Handy tools for hanging axes. The non-marring white rubber mallet is to draw the axe up onto the haft. The quick & dirty wood mallet was carved out of a piece of London Plane (never crack or split). The wide flat surface is great for driving wedges.

Great looking project, does the bit have different edge treatments hard to tell from the pics. Now about the haft that is something I'm going to have to try one day as per your instructions

Yes, one bit is fully hand honed. The other was hand filed but then just dressed on the non-woven wheel. They both have the same profile and function the same. It just gives a different look. I like the hand honed look better.

Awesome! I was hoping we'd get to see it done.

Your buddy? He's getting a really fine axe.

Skilled and deliberate work on that head and haft both.

Wow great file work guys I'm inspired by those beautiful banana grinds
