What did you rehang today?

That's the same Norlund I have...boy's axe weight, full size eye. I see you mostly utilized a longer wedge to account for the extra eye space...good call. Probably much easier than thinning down a short full-size handle like I did with mine.

That vintage handle is unique being short, but with the larger eye...good find and match for the head!

Actually that is a standard Link boy's axe handle. It required little reshaping to be a good fit.

This is a great axe that I have had for a while. No ID, but the rusty loose head was in great shape as was the handle. I just removed it, cleaned and sharpened it and re-wedged it and then oiled the handle. It is a 3lb head on a 28" handle.

Hot damn JB that's a good looking axe. I agree with pegs, the bevels have a unique look and I like em. I was considering grinding in something like that on my CT HB, but thought it might go better on one of their other heads.

Had a failed hang if that counts ( it is crammed on there pretty tight )
I took a chance on an unmarked ( other than goggles and 1-1/4 ) Dayton hatchet head for 50 cents ( black paint and red epoxy so I thought it may at least be a Cooper era plumb ) and while is a fairly modern one the Steel seems decent enough.
I tried to make a 20" handle for it out of an old pick handle ( I now have 10X more appreciation for what COTS the axe handle god does ) and some relief cuts were too deep to fully remove, fitted it as a trial and the bit would be cockeyed. So while I didn't even finish it , I was able to sink it into a stump a bunch of times and really like the overall size and weight ( I've been wanting to try a 1-1/4 on a 20" handle )
I think I'm gonna have to get a fat axe handle and make it out of that , I had good success with my sub zero and think I can make it work. ( I managed without a draw knife or spokeshave )

An "unFinnished" project.

I got this beauty of an old 3lb Rixford "quasi-Jersey" head, and thought that it was a perfect match for a 28" straight handle.

Oh wow, really? It's a spitting image of mine, but on mine the eye is full-sized, and the boys axe handle goes straight through the head. Huh.

Is it possible its the handle? I have a boys axe handle that fit perfectly onto a hatchet head, never fit with a boys axe head. First and last handle I purchased from that Hardware store.

Did this awhile ago was the first and last for the vinegar soak, used a haft that came with a bit hung upside down also was flame hardened. Took lots of work to get it back to the bare wood and then a few coats of BOL and wax.

My $5 norlund tomahawk that I got this weekend. I took the handle from my woodslasher boys axe and hung it on this head. It originally had a 14 inch handle that I removed because it was too short for a 2lb head. It now has a 26" handle.

JB, that is a really good looking axe. It might be where it is laying on the deck boards but it looks like it has a nice gentle upsweep on the handle. 3lbs is a great weight for a multi-purpose axe. Nice work on this one. I have some Duquesne (sp?) Jersey that takes a boy’s axe handle I need to use – thinking straight handle now – modified of course.

Rickoff – I hadn’t seen an Ardex HB pattern – Canadian? That also is a keeper. I know what you mean about the vinegar – I did a couple in a “bath” a couple of years ago and decided not to do it again. It takes once or twice before a guy gets the hint. Yours looks good though.

Traditionalist – $5 Norlund is a winner as well. I only have two of the Norlunds and they aren’t the sought after patterns. Guys like those Norlunds for a similar reason I like the “Lakeside” axes – half of it is nostalgia. $5 sharpened and hung axes? – Nothing wrong there.

300six recently mentioned that if you look back at the hangs done by members here over the last couple of years you can see a difference in "quality" or "skill" for a lack of better words - I think he's right.

Thank you all for sharing your work.

It is straight. Ther is an optical illusion caused by a combination of the deck boards and the fact that the back of the handle is curved. A ruler says that the front is straight. As for hangs getting better, it is like anything else. There is only one way to improve skills.

I might have had similar skill as JB and Agent_H when they first started posting here (years ago). Now they're out of my league! :)

Thank you Steve. Something tells me you can hang a mean axe.

Having really good examples to work from and people willing to answer questions about them makes a huge difference. Sheer volume of attempts has to pay off somehow as well I imagine. I certainly have rehung things that I haven’t posted here…

Perhaps, but we are still chasing Cityofthesouth!

So, since you brought COTS up… that fellow does that quality of work on wood, steel, leather, kydex, photography, design, and who knows what else. I look forward to his updates. Enough that I probably owe him money for just reading his thread... lol.

Looking forward to his jack-o-lantern this year… His would be – 1:1 Keen Kutter or Plumb Champion replica in relief… Mine – a “Collins in a box” (mispelled most likely)

I don't think so, which is why I was surprised...I tried a Link boy's handle. The eye of my Norlund was significantly larger both front/back and side-to-side. There was literally no way to hang the head on the handle. That handle went on my Craftsman boy's axe very well. I had to order a House 28" full-size and thin it down for my Norlund. It's a huge eye compared to it's size. I want to re-hang it again on a straight handle (it didn't come out as well as I hoped), but the work of thinning a thick full-size handle down again is annoying.
