That's not too bad for one edge of a double bit. The axe definitely has a lot of life left in it. I'd just sharpen it and put back in use. It's a Kelly Perfect. It can hold its own against any axe made.

So here is the first totally hand split/hand carved handle. The head is a 1.75lb Rixford. Total weight is 2lb 3oz and it is 17" long.

I just shaved down the handle on my kelly, I can't sand it down cause I'm on vacation, but it barely needs it. I shaved the tapers in and made it semi-octagonal.

Oh, JB i didnt even think about splitting hickory, here i was lookin around for a local mill sellin straight sawn hickory when i coulda just pounded a wedge or froe

That is shagbark, JB. Nice job on the handle!

I think you've initiated a wonderful trend quinton. Rivving billets in order to make handles is as sound and natural a way as it possibly gets. Artistic expression while shaping then all of a sudden shows up too.

Thanks, 300.. Sometimes we think, and, or make things more difficult than they really are. An axe, and a tree is about all that's really needed to make a handle..a few other hand tools make the task easier though.

I've tried to "dissect" your handle as best as I could from the pictures. Two pictures of endgrain are overlaid on the first picture of the side view of the whole handle.

The bottom of the handle (lower left) is a view of the endgrain from picture #4, looking in the direction of the arrows.

The end grain at the top of the handle from picture #3 is shown at the lower right looking in the direction of the arrows. This image was flipped. It's meant to simulate what one would see if a slice was taken from the top and observed in the direction of the arrows.

What I see:
1. from the side view the grain appears to run straight.
2. the endgrain views show matching grain patterns on both ends.

IMHO, that is what I would call a straight grained handle. And good on you.

Just a postscript FWIW for anyone. Some years ago I helped a family member clear some land for a house. I brought home some Hickory from that site and put it in my garage. At some point I decided I needed a mallet. I grabbed a piece of that Hickory assuming that it was plenty dry to make a handle. Well, you guessed it, the piece wasn't dry. The handle shrunk and the mallet failed.:o

$10 later..... a true temper kelly works flint edge connie. Tips the scale at 5 lbs (marked 5 under the poll). The original handle had the red paint on it so I copied that onto a handle I had on hand, I kind of like it :). I really like the stamp.

First rehang in the books today. I have picked quite a bit of stuff over the last few months and have not had the time to tackle any projects until today. It took me a while, and its not perfect but it came out decent and should make a solid user. Stanley 6lb maul on a 36in lowes handle. Need to finish the edge, toss some BLO on it and then sink it into a few logs to test it out. I definitely learned a few things today..

I support this. Looks good.

The eye is much larger at the top, the only thing I that comes to mind is that the original hang was epoxy filled.
