What did you rehang today?

Daizee, nice old Grove you got there. Love them old hatchets. I would probably go around the top of that head with bees wax or similar and fill that gap. I do that on the end grain and around the head any way to keep moisture out. Hang and handle looks fine to me. Sometimes I get those gaps in the front of the eye, at times they are unavoidable.
Cool hatchet!

Good idea on the beeswax. I put more BLO on the top after the picture, but I did just buy a nice puck of beeswax at the hardware store a couple days ago.

I expect kindling for the wood stove will be this one's primary mission in life.

3lb head. Only mark I could find is CAST STEEL. 28in. straight handle from TN Hickory.

Good clean hang, Whiskey. Looks great.

Daizee, at that weight, 1-3/4 pounds, I might have stepped up to a house axe handle even if it meant shaving down the eye a bit to make it fit. Just a suggestion. Beautiful hang! :D

This is a nice HUB 1914 axe head that I picked up for $10. I like the shape. The handle is an appropriately sized old unused replacement.

Is that a crack?

It's just were material that had been opened by the drift was compressed back together by the remaining forging process. Given the number of axes you own I'm surprised that you've never seen this on your own. Most older forged heads (I believe the term is open die forging) have this characteristic. A lot of new Gransfors owners have the same question since they are made in the same fashion.

Hadn't seen one on the top and the length and angle made it look more crackish to me

This has ridges in the eye. Maybe a true temper? Cool Hudson Bay anyway

One one of my favorite users. Yours is a good looking axe and hang

True Temper is my guess too but even if not, "Red Ridge Eyes" keep an edge and do work.

Thanks. I think it's a good tool, it took particularly long to sharpen. The bit was quite hard.

Great looking Hudson. That is my favorite pattern and I don't own one. The actions for them go to high for my poor self.

Anyone out there lusting over Hudson Bay pattern better jump on the Swedish Wetterlings improved version before they're all gone.
