What did you rehang today?

This was a house axe that had a loose handle, bad looking eye wood and a good but mushroomed head. I posted it on eBay for $14 and it didn't sell twice. So I fixed it. Knocked the head off, cleaned out the kerf, refinished the head and handle, sat the head lower so I could cut the cruddy end off, new wedge, metal wedges, BLO and wax. Not an art piece but now a great user. If this doesn't have much value it's still a great tool, I may keep it and use it.

I saw that and almost bought it. It has a good vintage look and a lot of life left. I just have too many to work on now. Good job on it. I don't understand people that say there are no good heads at good prices left.

A little help needed. Attempting to post some pics of the latest work however the Insert Image always asks for a URL???

The pic in question (like all of them) is a JPEG on my computer. What am I missing please?

I think that paying members can post JPEGs as attachments, while the rest of us have to first upload the photo to a hosting site (photobucket is one example) to get a URL for the photo.

Thank you very much! Took a bit but here is the result... Both Plumbs got hafted Saturday morning. They each have 6 coats of BLO touched sanded and heated between layers. The Hickory will not accept any more oil which I take as a good thing. Were it perfect the Double Bit stamping would be as clear as the Single but I am pleased with the end result never the less. Both pieces of Hickory ended up at 22" OAL and they swing just perfectly. I actually ended up cutting both of them from 28" to 24" and then arrived at the 22". I'll be using them both Tuesday for trail clearing where we walk our Basset Hounds. I suspect the DB will remain at it's length however the SB may get trimmed again to 19" or slightly less. I don't care for the oversized Fawn's foot on the SB versus the clean lines of the DB.

It's tough to find time for these projects but I really did enjoy the hours in the shop without the pressure to crank out some other piece of woodwork for an actual "paying" client.

Both of those look great mako.

I like the fawn's foot. It might be the angle but maybe thin the handle a bit before chopping it off? It's a pretty piece of wood. Try to shape it from the fawn's foot up?

Either way, they both look like they were put together with care. Victory.

Just hung this no-name 4lb'er with bevels. The handle was slimmed down.

Nice and slim, looks nice. I'm working myself up for rehanging a hatchet sized double bit with a totally hand carved handle. I'm thinking 20" or so unless someone more knowledgeable tells me that another length is more appropriate. I have nice hammers to show off but I won't show them unless there is an edged tool to show with them. Stay tuned.

Just hung my first axe today. No name 3.5 lb head, stained the handle after removing the original finish, just to see how it looked, its really uneven but this is going to be a user not a wall hanger, and I kinda like how it turned out. (Dogs were very interested in it lol). I restained the sanded portion under the head and it looks cleaner now than in these pics.

Garret, that looks like an Anerican axe and tool Co, Ideal Ridge model. Good axe:thumbup:

I like the hammers you post. There is a Skookum sledge outside here that wants a new handle. Any pictures of the small double bit?

Garrett, that is a great axe. There is room to rehang it as well.

Thanks! I got it off e bay for cheap becuase I liked the temper line, good to know it's quality

Also thanks! I am new to this, so I don't know the terminology too well yet. When you say room to rehang, you mean make it sit lower on the handle? I wasn't sure how low to make it sit and even getting it that far required a lot of sanding. It seems very snug and did not move during the couple of test swings I did with it but I am always open to suggestions.

Carpenters half hatchet. Not completely done. It needs more BLO and some wax. I might clean up the head more but I have 2 single bit axes and and a broad axe to redo as well.

Well then...I suppose this one that I wrapped up today is in your honor. It soaked through the work day in White Vinegar however I have not taken the file to cleaning up the cheeks. However I did take quite a bit of energy and worked a convex edge; the blade is (literally) razor sharp now. I knew it and still managed to get myself on the ring finger :o

That makes 3 Vintage Boys Axes in the shed now. I'm going to look around for a trade on a Vintage Splitting Axe head. I have a nice 36" Octagon piece of Hickory begging for a home.

Carefully slimmed down and octagon shaped (from an ordinary mass-produced origin?) haft looks to be a lovely job on your part. Folks here keen on chopping really should take the opportunity to swing one of these in order to experience for themselves what they're missing when they settle for modern wood or plastic 'clubs'. The difference is not unlike riding in a car with springs and riding in one without.
