Thought a simple handle would be appropriate for the head:
Hickory split from 8/4 board, hand tools (no abrasives), and eyeball. Roughed out blank with hatchet. Rasps to fit handle to eye. Everything else bladed tools. Finished with cabinet scraper. Here is what was used (forgot to include hand saw):
Wow! You would think that for such a simple handle I could have got it done with a lot less tools. But on the other hand I wouldn't have an excuse for having all of them.

If it comes from full size axe, try to check if you can reuse it as shorter, boy's axe handle (depending on the shape of curves)Pulled the head off this, and now I’m undecided if I can re-use this handle or not?

I don’t think there are any cracks below the shoulder, and it’s got a nice slim aspect to it...question is, is it toast?
It’s from a hatchet, around 14”, I was thought about shortening it though, the head is pretty small (2” tall at the heel) would a 12” handle be to small overall? If it comes from full size axe, try to check if you can reuse it as shorter, boy's axe handle (depending on the shape of curves)
For some reason I assumed it was long handle. That changes things a little bit (I love preserving old handles). Unless you gonna use it as throwing hatchet, I would try to have some fun and glue it together. Maybe even fill it with saw dust/wood glue mix and cut new kerf. I assume that hatchet is for your personal use and you are aware of its limitations. It’s from a hatchet, around 14”, I was thought about shortening it though, the head is pretty small (2” tall at the heel) would a 12” handle be to small overall?
Yes, the only reason I’m considering keeping/shortening the handle is it would make a nice light backpacking setup. Guess I should just give it a whirl and see what happens, I don’t have another handle ready for it at this point anywayFor some reason I assumed it was long handle.
