Since Red Knight came up, here is a boy's axe I've wanted to make right. Little.Knight Little.Knight Little.Knight It picked it up on the white with red swell handle. It will go back on it.
Of course. The palm swell needs some material removed but cleaned and oiled, it will be good. The sharp bit is what needs attention.
Awesome! Can't wait to see it finished! Where did you find that one? Honestly I had never heard of(or paid attention to) the Red Knight line. But now that I stumbled on that Connecticut pattern and have been looking there really aren't many around.
Yes it is definitely one of my favorites! Also because of that helve too though. Been saving that one for a long time. I made a mask for that axe last evening. I sewed it, with a welt, but it's still a simple one. Although I used a stud this time and not a snap. And thanks to everyone else too. I feel privileged to own these tools. Some of them are really beautiful! But it's not nearly as much fun if you can't share em a little with like minded folks.
Beautifully done! Absolutely PERFECT grain alignment on haft AND wedge.... It's a smart looking hatchet.
Good Monday morning...I managed to rehang this young fella over the weekend. 26½" oak haft 3lb Plumb National Dark walnut & poplar wedge Total weight 3½lbs Hand filed, Nicholson USA-flat bastard & mill bastard
Thank you DB, i appreciate your kind words. I found myself without enough wedges or material of proper length and got a little creative. Its a solid, tight hang and i am pleased Thanks again
Haven't had a chance to post anything in ages it seems! A while back I had a co-worker ask for a nice axe to take camping, her cheapo metal handled hatchet wasn't quite cutting it at the fire pit. I found this boy's axe for just a few bucks, got it all cleaned up and put a decent edge on it, and popped it onto a House Handle 28" stick. Of course it needed a quick leather mask too. Should serve her well! The head has remnants of blue paint and is stamped with a "P" and a "1" on opposite sides.
I love how dark that haft turned out! Is that just blo? It's beautiful with that head on it. It seems like you've got a bunch of national patterns. Do I have that right? I seem to recall you posting a bunch of them. Also, I'm curious, did you hang it closed on purpose or was it a consequence of filling the bottom of the eye? Sometimes I end up having to hang some more closed than I want to make sure it's good n' full on the bottom!
Thank you. Just BLO and i intentionally hung it as closed as possible while keeping maximum contact to the tongue. I love a closed hang I have 3 national pattern plumbs including this most recent. One a scout on original haft...a near future project. The other is a a 1¾lb hatchet i inherited from my grandfather Hope to find more
Looks gorgeous. Some hafts just turned out that dark, I've got one that turned out this dark and one might swear these were torched
Thanks man. This handle was covered in tar and or pitch...globbed and bubbled in places. Generally used, abused and never broken. I gave it a scrape and some BLO
I've had a couple that have really darkened up a lot with blo. I've got a few others that got real dark after oil as well but can't seem to locate the photos. I find Miller's so cool because it's oak! Appears to me to be red oak though I'm not a hundred percent sure. I've never seen oak get that dark so it's encouraging! I'll have a lot of gorgeous hand made hafts in 50+ years! Lol.
Plumb 3lb on a NOS 30" handle. I just had to scrape and oil it to let it's beauty show. The head was sharpened with 3 grades of files and will catch on a fingernail.
