What did you rehang today?

I like all of these. The hammer is a 4lb head marked England Sheffield Steel on a 13" reshaped piece of old sledge handle treated with BLO/beeswax. The True Temper half hatchet is on a brand new (ahem, see the area of worm holes?!?) House Handle treated with natural Watco Danish oil, for fun I used a bloodwood (satine) wedge. This turned out so nice that the imperfect handle really bothers me. My favorite is an unmarked large hatchet on it's original 17.5" handle. This is the one nice handle from my last group in "Followed me home". I just wire wheeled the head, then lightly rasped and sanded the surface of the wood before the standard Blo/beeswax treatment. The handle is tight and excellent.

Hi guys, I'm new here so I hope I get this right. I've really enjoyed this thread in fact I have read it from start to finish and am impressed with all the talent and willingness to share ideas hear. I've always had a keen interest in American quality from days gone by and now that I'm retired, I have the chance to revive some of these old treasures. Here (if I did this right) are some before and after shots of a couple of BSA hatchets I recently rescued from the Bay. They were a little rough, but came out half way decent I think. Metal cleanup, profiling, new scales on the Bridgeport and rehung the Plumb handle.

Those both turned out awesome! You've got skills.

Congrats on your retirement. I'm looking forward to your contributions to this forum.

Siskiyou and Olybears: Your restorations are beautiful. Those bits are like works of art. I can't come close.

I have a Bridgeport missing scales that I was thinking of doing the exact same thing to. Did you glue it at all or just use pins?

Yeah, I fit the scales first, epoxied and drilled them. The brass pins were a tight fit, but really not doing anything and they are epoxied in as well... Good luck with yours.

My dad gave me this axe 45 years ago and it was beat up then. I carried it in my pickup until 9 years ago and decided to restore it in memory of my dad. Didn't know your not supposed to destroy the patina, but it was really beat up with red paint for patina so I did the clean and polish thing. Put a cheap hardware handle in it 9 years ago not knowing anything about a proper hanging job. A few months ago, I picked up a House brand boys handle for it, thinned and shaped it to my liking and here's the result. There's a cedar pattern in one of the pictures, but that's for another day.[/IMG]

Wow. Everything on this page looks great. Any one of these axes look ready to go and well treated.

Olybears - that Jersey looks sharp, sharp, sharp, and I like how much tongue you left proud over the top of the eye.

Ultrahesh, that Plumb looks like a bruiser.

On a side note, locally, the =Craftsman= axes have been bringing a premium at places. The stops I frequent they are marked higher than they were a year ago and at least two shop owners say they are selling before other older axes most of the time.

Interesting...I wonder if the Craftsman tool guys are getting around to the axes now. And as a side note, does anyone know the range of the =CRAFTSMAN= axes? I have tried a few times to date them, and it seems like the information is all over the place.
