What did you rehang today?

The Norlund looks like it would be fun to swing too.

That swell is great. Shaping like that looks more "natural" for the lack of a better word.

All of them are looking like class-act tools.

That Norlund sure turned out nice, the swell looks good.

Thanks for the kind words. It feels great and should be comfortable to use...hoping it gets some use really soon.

Did this job today, Old Dunlap hatchet, it almost carries the lines of a rafting pattern besides the nail puller. The edge didn't need any reprofiling, I'd say the hatchet didn't see much use. The old wedge was essentially one little layer of ply-wood so I popped the head off and replaced the wedge, dropped the head down on the haft and rasped/sanded away the damage on the swell. Also straightened out the handle. All it needs is some oiling and little more attention to the edge and she's ready to rock!

i would like to have some detail about process and size of the hatchet, please.
how did you straigthen the haft for example?

did you use any kind of pry bar to pull off the wedge?

First time using cherry for an axe handle. It did have a fawns foot but I got a bit over zealous and split it when I was wedging it. Hacked it off, glued and taped and we're all good.
Overall it seems like a good wood choice but we'll see how it is in the long run. It had great shock transfer, certainly not a wrist breaker.

To Flexo: I don't have exact specs on the hatchet at the moment, but when I'm home I'll let you know. I straightened the haft by sticking the butt end of it in a pot of boiling water, let it stew for a while and then quickly clamped it to a 2x4 and let it sit over-night.

Be quite interested to hear how you fare with this. From what I can see on yours the grain orientation (ends and lengthwise) is perfect or pretty darned close. Within a few years the natural wood colour will become magnificent. I only have Black Cherry experience with regard to canoe paddles, enough to know that the wood is rather soft but boy is it ever flexible; should make for a 'cushioned ride' axe handle. As to how shock proof it is you're probably best off not to overstrike with this nor pry too hard in getting a stuck blade loose.

Halfaxe, nice work on bringing out the bevels and the wedgework looks super clean.

Looks like a pretty uniform run on heartwood/sapwood in the handle. That's an attractive tool.

Thanks Agent H. I thought the dichotomy in the head went well with the dichotomy in the handle. The full bit on an old axe is like finding gold.

Got to this one over the weekend to put up for sale. She's a goodun but I have enough axes and no money in the bank ;)

Got the Council Tools Hudson Bay pattern hafted last night on a 28 inch Link Handle

Looks great. You must have been very busy with a rasp/drawknife/spokeshave and sander because the Link brand axe handles I was rubber-necking at a local store last week looked like misshapen baseball bats.

Finished this. The tiny little eye makes these a pain to get a perfect fit.
This one isn't perfect but close enough. Just need to sharpen it and try it out.

Thanks! Would you believe that the only thing I touched on that handle was the eye portion to fit to the head? Its got the best feel of any Link handle I've ever gotten. Nice and thin everywhere it counts.

Wow, excellent job on that! I really like the bit profile on that little hatchet.
