What did you rehang today?

4lb Plumb on 32" House handle. I had to modify the handle to thin it out quite a bit underneath the axe head. If I had to rely on an axe to cut down my trees and buck them for firewood this is the axe I would use.

Finished this. The tiny little eye makes these a pain to get a perfect fit.
This one isn't perfect but close enough. Just need to sharpen it and try it out.

Rockman0, that came out great! Trust me I know how much of a pain these heads are to hang. /\ That's about as good as it gets.

Nice hang Tobiism! Is that an oil based stain on the haft?

Thank you! Yes it is red mahogany Minwax oil based stain. I also very lightly burned the grain in the handle.

I've had good and bad results with oil based stains. Depends on the wood. Some handles take it better than others.
I'm going to try leather dye. I remember one of the guys on here having great results with it. Got a good even color all over.

I tried leather dye a long time ago and didn't have good results. It kept coming off on my hands.

My results are the same for the most part. I assume it's user error on my part as I've seen some very nice outcomes here on the forum.

I'm assuming it probably needs to be thinned and used in conjunction with another dye of some sort.

You can buy feibings alcohol based dye ready made from any leathercraft supplier. I've had good results with it for years on all my knifemaking projects. Just be sure it's alcohol based. I'm not a fan of the water based stain.

Thanks Bridger.

I'll have to look at what I have. I didn't pay any attention to whether or not it was alcohol based... "Red-handed" should be during the act, not after...

I finally got around today and hung my 'russian styled' axe on a quickly handcarved birch handle, I feel pretty good about its looks, but the hang itself is questionable, when driving the wedge it split a little below the eye, feels a tad unsafe. I will probably give it another shot in the future. Have a nice weekend guys!

I love this!

I really like seeing a quick rough carved handle used on an axe. I can imagine this was common back in the day. Get a handle on it as quick as you can and get back to work. Later in the evenings you could refine the handle and get it more to your liking. But it is still perfectly functional after just the basic shaping.

A Kelly Woodslasher hatchet I've been working on for a little while. I still need to pop in a wedge and add a few coats of BLO but I'm fairly excited about this one.
