What Did You Sharpen Today?

Touched up the edge on one of my Spyderco GB2's this morning at work, while waiting for job assignments to be passed out.
Used the Hapstone RS at 17⁰ per side with a PDT metallic bonded CBN 120 and 400 grit progression, finished with a 3 micron Gunny Juice strop.
I've been really happy with the RS, a great little guided sharpener!

How are you liking the metallic bonded stones? I was wanting to try one of PDT's benchstones but I'm not sure the extra cost is worth it over resin bonded.

B bmo419 , they're great!

I really like resin bonded stones as well, but I'm confident the metallic bonded stones will far outlast them.

I certainly understand about the extra cost though...🍻

I'm assuming they cut similarly to resin bonded since it's only the bond that's different? I might have to grab one of the smaller stones to try out at least. Thanks for the reply

No problem.
I don't have any resin bonded CBN stones to compare them to, but compared to the resin bonded diamond stones I have, they cut a bit less aggressively, provide a finer finish, and give great feedback in use.

Putting the bite back on one of my favorite kitchen knives this evening, a Takeda stainless-clad, Aogami Super, 180mm Funayuki.
I used the new to me Hapstone V8 large magnetic table module, and the Gen2 Vertical Rod assembly. Both worked out great.
Did 12⁰ per side, (yep, not a traditional single-bevel funayuki) using 120 and 400 grit PDT metallic bonded CBN stones.
About to finish it with a 1 micron Gunny Juice diamond-loaded balsa wood strop. 🍻

I sharpened a Bark River Knives PSK EDC in Magnacut today. I used a 400 grit vitrified diamond stone, after that a 3000 grit vitrified diamond stone. Then onto the strop with 5/7 micron diamond paste and then 1 micron diamond spray. For whatever reason when I strop with 1 micron diamond there still seems to be some burr left or maybe I even raise one again. I can see this when looking through a magnifying glass. So most of the time I finish by stropping on leather with white Bark River compound maybe once or twice per side which seems to take care of that.

As for the BESS score I'm starting to feel like it's not consistent enough for me. There's still the variable of the testing medium. How tight do you tighten the screws down, how much do you pull on the string before you tighten down? Too many variables in my opinion. First score was 130, but i felt like I hadn't tightened the screws down enough. The two scores after that were 85. So take it with a grain of salt.

The biggest variable with the BESS tester is the speed of the test. The slower you go, the more accurate it is. The second biggest factor is the tightness of the media. You can eliminate that as a factor by applying 100g of weight to tension the media. I accomplish that by using a hemostat with a little jewelry bag tied to the handle containing a few weights. The total package weighs 101g. I don't think the tightness of the screws has much effect. The screw on the side where the media comes out barely needs to be tightened at all. The other one can just be lightly tightened if the knife is sharp. If the knife is dull, you do have to crank down on it a bit to keep it from slipping.

That's a beautiful knife. I would imagine that leaves a pretty toothy edge?

Some fine work fellas. Cant wait to get some time to get back at it. Got about 7 stacked up ready and waiting for friends.
Keep them coming, love the pics of your systems at work.
