what food would you misss the most?

You know - I have been thinking about this thread - and I think what I would miss the most - as far as volume - is COLD ice water.

I know it is lame - but I think that is it.

you should read the mosquito coast if you haven't. It's kinda relative. I think that's a good answer.

I still stand with my beer.

wait are we talking about going on a long backpacking trip or moving out into the bush????

Protourist,

I can't tell you how happy (and surprised) I am to see someone else mention capers. I get a lot of good-natured grief from friends for adding them to a wide variety of dishes. My efforts to promote them have led some friends to jokingly refer to me as the "capered crusader". I got really lucky and met a girlfriend who always requests extra capers with appropriate dishes. Our only disagreement on the subject arises from her preference for surfine capers and my leaning toward non-pareil capers.

[Marinated artichoke hearts would also be on my list.]

A large New Mexico pizza from a small shop in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia called Little Havanas. Consists of a slightly spicy minced beef and tomato sauce with fried green beans and melted cheese on a thick, doughy base. When the pizza's cooked, they put a dollop of cold sour cream on each slice. Eaten with your choice of beverage (in my case an ice cold Cascade Premium Light beer) it is the most delicious thing I have ever eaten.

coffee definitely.
and chocolate and cheese.

I would not miss bbq or steak... anyone who knows me knows that if I go long enough without coffee I will kill something, so I would likely kill something I could cook on the fire.

Hands down... Kraft Mac and Cheese. I can't imagine a world without it. Gimme whats in the blue box!

Once when I was a little kid, I asked a sunday school teacher what heaven actually was, why was it so cool. He said, "what is your favorite food?" I replied, "Mac and cheese. No question." He said, "in heaven, you can swim in rivers of mac and cheese and anytime you want it, you need only to think about it and you'll have a never ending bowl of the best mac and cheese ever." I quickly asked, "but what if my favorite is the sh!tty box kind?"

...I got sent home. I remember it all like it was yesterday. hahahaha

Here in Peru I miss extra old cheddar cheese, Kraft Miracle Whip, and green hot-dog relish!

When off in the bush for extended periods of time, we usually go to great lengths to make sure those little extras make it into camp, the things that you just can not do without. I have a photo somewhere of a 30 passenger Sikorsky S-61 helicopter dropping off about 20 cases of beer (and nothing else!) at one of our camps in Greenland, somebody was jonesing for a beer!

A few years ago at a remote fly-in job in the Arctic, one of our old camp cooks told me that the one thing he makes sure he never runs out of is coffee, this topic was broached as the plane arrived with our two weeks worth of food and somehow we ended up with decafinated coffee by mistake. He tore all the labels off the coffee bags and tried to pass it off as regular coffee. I quickly discovered his secret when I started to get caffeine withdrawl headaches even though I was drinking my normal dose.

That being said I guess I would go a bit crazy without my coffee. I always travel with coffee and about three different ways of making it, no matter where I go.

... and I always travel with a bottle of Tobasco...

I don't drink much alcohol, hate coffee, and do not cook with salt. What I would miss would be good shrimp (but could substitute little Gammarus I guess), and spices- chili powder, cayenne pepper, garlic, garlic, garlic, pepper, sage. I am a spice food lover but would be able to substitute some natural spices but Garlic and Cayenne would be the most missed. I only miss chocolate when it is around me but I am not letting myself eat it, so in a situation lacking sweets I think I could handle it. But as a carnivore beyond all else I am sure most of my cravings could be satiated!

We must get together for a cookout. My Steelhead recipe with capers and marinated artichoke hearts is to die for.

I know it isn't the topic question, but this thread reminded me of the History Channel show, "The Real Story of Building the Bridge over the River Kwai", which is about the POWs forced to build a railroad for the Japanese. They were worked for over 12 hours a day with no power equipment and only fed rice gruel...and were starving. One survivor talked about how they all missed salt, sugar, and oil. Another chap said their mouths would start salivating when thinking of a cold beer. So, I guess all your guesses on what you would miss are pretty spot on. :D
