Cats can get territorial or cranky for a couple reasons. If the litterbox is foul, make sure it's clean. Make sure the door to where it's kept isn't locked, etc. Make sure the cat gets punished (reasonably) and in a timely fashion so it knows what it did wrong. Mine would get placed at his mess, yelled at, and locked in the basement. he hates being alone. He outgrew that phase, I guess. Also, there's a hormone-like product you can get at the vet that simulates the smell of them rubbing on things. Note that they won't pee where they play, sleep, or eat, so this stuff makes them feel like they're in a sleeping spot or something.
