What happened to the snark thread? Revenge of the Antisnark (Runaway Free Snark)

Sandpaper is definitely a great way to get a quick edge. Before I got my stones, that is all I used.
Something I've noticed with convex edges is that even though they may not "feel" as sharp as comparable V-edges, often times they cut better and are usually much more durable.

They do seem to do better with cuts where the whole blade needs to move through the media as opposed to cuts where just the edge or bevel of your blade comes in contact. That's why I love having a convex on my 14, because most of it's chores involve the whole blade.

Agreed, my convexed edge BK14 does feel sharp, but not as sharp as some of my other (thinner, V-edge) blades. It cuts through anything like there's no tomorrow, though.

I convexed my 14 w/ sandpaper. I actually did a quick touch up on my Mini Grip today w/ some sandpaper and a quick stropping on my jeans too. I was in a hurry and the edge was 'not cutting it'. Took 5 minutes to get it slicing paper easily again, not shaving sharp but it was good enough to head out the door with.

Convexed my 14 with sandpaper and a mousepad too. I wanted to ask if there is a way to keep the convex when resharpening on another medium? I don't have a belt or anything, got a Lansky Deluxe, some stones and different grit sandpapers. Suppose I'd want a polished convex edge, I suppose that won't be easy using the guided Lansky system, right? I think I'm in dire need of a strop.

Everyone should have a strop.

The funny thing is that I only know the term in English. If I go around and tell people in my neighbourhood about a "strop" to sharpen my knives with, they give me a weird look. I'm not amazed about that since "strop" is some old Dutch/Flemish local dialect for anus/asshole. Can you imagine someone talking about a 'anus' for their knives, and people looking weird? Well :D

Booked a cabin near Lesterville, Mo, in the heart of the Mark Twain National Forest in a few weeks. Hoping to get a little hiking time in, and test out the MAP 3500. Should be a good time.

You'll have a blast Dubz. Some great hiking around there. Johnson Shut-ins is awesome and most of the trails have re-opened.

Well make sure you don't cut your strop :D I would assume that you have leather in Belgium? Make your own, its not that hard.

I'll have a go at it ;-).

Ran into another problem. I wanted to put some stainless bolts and nuts on my Eskabar, but the sizes don't match. The overall size of the nut to match the handle would be 5 in EU standards, but the hole for the bolt isn't big enough for a 5. A size 4 can be pushed through with some effort, but the nut for that is too small for the handle. Sigh. The search continues.

Longer bolt and cut it down maybe?

The length isn't an issue, it's the width. The nut that fits requires a size 5 bolt in width for the threading to fit, but a size 5 bolt doesn't fit in the holes of the plastic handle scales. A size 4 bolt is able to be pushed through the holes of the scales (very tight fit), but the nut for that is also size 4, being too small for the nut-space in the handle scale.
In fact, the standard factory bolts and nuts could be compared with a size 3 (width) for the bolt and a size 5 nut with size 3 threading.
I could make the holes in the scales larger, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. I'll visit some more stores...

Yeah you are in a tough spot there, you might be able to order US spec hardware online, not really sure where though...

Yep, or I'll have to just keep using these ones -which are fine by the way, it's just something to keep me busy-.
Standards and standardization... oh well :-)

Galeo, shoot me an email, I think I have the appropriate screws at home and I can drop a set in the mail for you.

Which bag should I get??? I know beckerheads love this question! I want a 3day pack that can hold my laptop, for around $100 (used is fine).

yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of SAE parts available in the EU.
you might ask at a place that services American automobiles. There's gotta be one somewhere.

Good deal. Wanted to hit Johnson Shut- ins, Elephant Rocks State Park, and Taum Sauk.

Why not just ream the scale holes out a little to fit the 5s ? The original screws could still be used, but then you'd have the option to go SS when you wanted to.

Here ya go Biscuit, my "beer purse".
