What is with A.G. Russel?

Thank you for posting that. Learn something new every day.
A.G. earned my respect right there... I don't think Walmart would help like that unless it was profitable for them
The bolded part is my favorite. So true.

I'm going over to A.G.'s site right now to browse the goodies.:D

Me too!

I guess I am pretty stupid, or so it would appear to me. The AG Russell Slip Joint knives made with bg-42 and stag are selling for $185. I bought the older model which was in 440a about nine years ago, I believe, before I knew what I do know. I received the knife and saw what I thought was a flaw in the handle. Little did I know that it was natural stag and these imperfections were not a flaw. I called Ag Russell knives and spoke to the woman there. She said what do you want, a refund. I said no I would like to get A Bob Dozier Professional Guide knife, and pay the differance. The knife was $230 at the time I think, and I payed for the differance in price and sent the slip joint wharncliffe whittler back. I have thought about not having that knife for a while now. I got a nice custom, but I don't have the small wharncliffe whittler in stag. Now I can get one in BG-42 which is not a steel you see, other than custom knives or special runs by production makers. I guess it is not so dumb after all, because now I can have the better steel and I have the Dozier custom. Kind of like having your cake and eating it too.

Walmart serves a purpose. We used to have Five and dimes everywhere. The problem with Walmart is that it is not a neibghborhood five and dime owned by a neighborhood family. It is a voracious pressure point on the market in every department, forcing price and quality down. It is valuable for a part of the consumer class to have entry-level goods. But if those goods don't last, or your children are poisoned by non-existent foreign health & safety codes, it's a false saving.

It is seductive to think of how much cheaper you can get it, but what is "it"? And as others here have said, what do you do when the smaller, quality outlets have been driven out?

No they most certainly are not your local five and dime store. It is a store that is handy for some things, but it's business practices leave a lot to be desired. I love Macy's and would rather go there just to see the way they set up their displays. The sales people there are really good as well. There used to be quite a few discount department stores, but they have been driven out of business by you know who. Is this called progress?

I've never seen so many people making a mountain out of a molehill as I've seen on this thread. It's really simple; if you don't want to pay a higher price don't buy, go elsewhere. Bottom line! Why argue for the sake of arguing.

This is a discussion forum. If we don't want to take part, why be here? What seems immaterial to you, may be important to someone else. That's why we have so many subforums here, to cater to different interests.

As a direct result of this thread I just dropped $168 on the A.G. Russell website for some of the titanium pen knives and the big Italian-made titanium framelock.

You can't tell me that $20 for a titanium and VG-10 penknife isn't a pretty good deal. I suspect the same $20 at Wal-Mart might buy something bigger but I doubt it would buy something better.

I'm looking forward to getting these knives and trying them out. I'll post a review once I've given them a good workout.

Thanks to akadave2 for finally prompting me to pull the trigger on some knives I've been interested in for a while.

if you think this thread is a waste of time, why are you posting?

Yep.
I know you're old enough to remember, everything was fine without Walmart and their shoddy import crap.
It wasn't that everyone was too high on their products, Walmart just came in with a lowball bid.
Then it just kept getting cheaper and cheaper until it couldn't go any lower,
then the products were cheapened to make more money.

Bring back Woolworth's!!!

They had soda fountains and if you ordered a banana split you popped a balloon to see how much you had to pay.

Walmart's has Blimpies...........................Ugh

I know, I know, and at a risk to ones own life going there it would appear. Some peoples idea of a good time. Used to be you had to watch western movies to see stampedes. Now they have them at Wal Mart. :(

Some total ignorance coupled with arrogance right here in this thread.

I know of no other knife dealer who has done more for collectors, companies and makers.

Shame some get their thrills over bashing a business model based on integrity that has been in place for around 40 years.

Thank you for all you have done A.G., don't be concerned with fools.

The problem is we like AG Russell and we do not care for Wal Mart. I don't think that movie is good at all. Do business with the good guy, not the "cattle ranch guys". The people they attract are very bad.

I hope that this thread is allowed to run it's course, but I also hope that Couger or Blues will remove those U-Tube entries. They are not to the point and they are not suitable for your daughters or my grand-daughters.

Again, I want to thank Dave and Thumbs and Neo for giving my customers the chance to tell me what they think of me and the A. G. Russell operation and the staff that makes it work.
