What is your #1 folder around $1k

$1000 + is beyond my willingness to spend on one knife , currently.

BUT ...if I were to spend upwards of $1000 , I’d go with a Chuck Gedraitis Persian Duplex Custom.

If it was my money I would probably try to get pretty much anything by David Mosier, a Christensen knifeworks Dreadeye, or something by Gavko, just with one of his less crazy grinds.

I haven't bought a knife at the $1k mark, but the only two knives over $1K that tempt me is the Demko AD10 and the Grant and Gavin hawk Deadlock OTF.

Someone would have to hold a gun to my head to make me spend that much. But IF they did, a custom slip joint.

Gorgeous knives so far on this thread.

To the OP, confused about your latest comment. You said none of the knives over $1K made you fall in love enough to make a user? Then they are more shelf queens? I would think it would be the opposite.....One's that you fall in love with you DON'T want to use because they are just that nice.

A nice T.A. Davidson slipjoint might tempt me towards that $1k mark as well one of these days...

I don't think you need more than $800ish to get something close to perfect, as far as build quality:
  • Chris Reeve
  • Shirogorov
  • Cheburkov
  • Holt Bladeworks
  • Gareth Bull
If I was going to buy an EDC and had up to $1500 to spend, I'd be going for style as much as substance. At that point, your personal preferences and tastes matter a lot more than what other people like.

Personally, for udner $1500 if I had to stay with one knife, I'd go with this:

I've more or less settled around this price range for the past few years and have found between 750-1000 to represent decent value in the custom folder world. Nothing that I've purchased for more than 1k has been as satisfying as what I've come across for less.

For consistency, Shiros and Thorburns are top choices (like everyone else said).

For a little less (depending on materials), Sharp By Design and Olamics are favorites of mine.

These makers have all been solid choices in my experience as well (Diskin, Gavko, Tobin Smith, Poggetti, & Doyle).

My two Shiros were $650 and $700 each but I have a $1600 Jens Anso Custom Neo arriving today. I hope it will replace my current EDC, a HatiOn Lite. A bit wider grip and contoured scales make it very attractive. A blade length of 85mm and the geometry of the two knives are remarkably similar.

If it becomes my main user it'll be time to consolidate and sell a half dozen nice folders. The journey has been very educational.

Why? To gamble and loose all your money or spend half on alcohol? Shucks I'd rather have a Shirogorov or a Brown Servo or Norseman knife. Or if autos are your thing I'd go with a damascus Microtech OTF or as the post above said, a Chris Reeve Damascus Large.
I think you mean "lose" and yes.

I don't keep any knives I don't use. But obviously money doesn't grow on trees so if I'm going to keep/use a very expensive knife - I want it to be one I absolutely love. I buy and sell until one just clicks for me and then I'll keep/use it usually indefinitely.

I'd rather have 4-5 really well used knives I love than 10-20 knives I like that barely get used. It doesn't have to be expensive for me to love it.. but I'm itching for something epic/beautiful/perfect to turn into a long term user... And those are usually expensive.

I got the Neo. It clicks for me. First impression is hands down it's the best 85mm knife I own. The blade belly will make it a superb butchering tool and it's pointed enough for fine work of every type. The subtle contouring of the scales makes it ergonomically superior to the Shiro. I can be plenty critical and this just checks all the boxes for me.

I only buy intended users and would never spend 1k on something that would get beat up . . . but that Neo does look mighty good!!
