What is your dream forging press?

that's getting complicated..
Mike
is there enough strength in the (what I call) pad-eyes
on the other end of the piston?
if there is
you could just turn the piston end for end..
using the cly end plate and pads for the strength and stabilization you need?
the length of the body will give a lot of leverage to the piston rod if on the other end.

then you can remove that stuff and the piston rod would be up out of the way from slag also..

the hoses would move more but 6 wire would take care of that..

edited to add
forgot to add
then to guild the die a guild pin set up through the die plate should do it.
I dont think that would make much difference, Dan. What im trying to do is keep as much of the laterial stress off of the cylinder by keeping it lined up straight. Hopefully the guide system will do that. It does appear more complicated but all i did was reconfigure 3 parts. There are still 3 parts in the new design, it just stiffens and supports the collars better.

This press is looking good to me ,i like the new supports on the guides ,can you guys tell me the program your drawing in and where do i get it some time i need my buddy fitzo to teach me to post pictures .
i am excited in seeing it completed .Mike do you have all the components to complete it and if i can be of help call me .
thanks for shearing this with us and i really enjoyed talking with you today call anytime i find this very interesting

I'm just using photostudio to massacre Mikes drawings .
he has the cats-kabooty to illustrate it .
I have use of a small cad program but it's easier for me to massacre JPG files with photostudio..

I assumed you saw this so I didn't address it in the PM.

Bowie, it's a bit of a PITA to post fotos if one is not a paid member. If you want, send 'em email and I'll be happy to post em. Later I'll explain how you can do it yourself.

Hey Ron

I used CoCreate OneSpace Designer. I have also used Solidworks. They are both 3D solid modeling programs. They are great tools to have.

I had a great talk with you Ron and im looking forward to meeting you someday. I respect your opinions a great deal so please post any comments you have, either positive or negative.

To answer your other question, no, I dont have everything yet.

If you have a spare 5hp motor, 13 GPM pump, control lever and about 20' of hydraulic hose with fittings why dont you do ahead and send it to me?;) Oh I need about 15 gallons of hydraulic oil too.:D Let me know when i can expect it.

Thanks for everything Ron

Ron, I tried to PM you but it didnt work so i sent you an email.

On the subject of dream presses i use one occasionally where i work that would live up to most knifemakers dreams. It's a 135 ton Cincinnati hydraulic brake press. The bed is about 8" wide and 10' long. The length of stroke is adjustable as well as the opening between dies. The stroke is adjustable by two methods. The first is by tonnage where it can be set to reverse anywhere between 23 and 135 tons pressure. The second is by position where it reverses based on the depth entered into the control. The second option would be great for forging bars to an exact thickness. With 10' to place your dies you would never have to change them.Just make all your dies the same height where they touch at the same time when the ram comes down. I've worked at the same place for 32 years and this press has been used on two shifts all that time not to mention it was used at another factory for years before it was brought to ours.I don't think a short bus full of knifemakers could live long enough to wear it out.

this is it :)

i have a question that i would like to hear some comments about what do you that use a press would add to your press if you could and what would you change .
i have tried to get the sound down to where its does not bother me i think i have it less than most presses that i have seen .Plain o Bill and I talked of this a while back ,if I remember he placed his power unit outside the shop which I think would be great no sound in shop . But things that would make life at the press more pleasant is a concern to me some of these guys spend all day in front of a machine and im sure there are thing sthat if they could they would add or take away .

Do you find that the noise is coming mostly from the motor? Does the pump make alot of noise?

I'm certainly not Ron but I slept close to his house once! ;) The pump screams louder in direct proportion to the pressure, Mike.
