I'm going to write up and add a bit later on in here, after I get some sugar into my blood stream about the Spyderco's Slysz Bowie, vs CRK's Sebenza from my vantage point, but since I no longer own any CRKs, I used the CPK Lil Fella for size comp:
Added: for a long while I sat on the fence regarding the Slysz Bowie, primarily because I don't like "bowie" themed blades and also because at just under $300 MAP, I concluded that there was more "value" in a lightly used Plain Jane Sebenza. Then I went through a handful of different CRKs (
damn you Fournier
) and despite the fact that I really loved the fit, finish and the feel of the CRKs, the blade itself always left me somewhat underwhelmed.
When the news was announced that Slysz Bowie was going to be discontinued, I waited for the sales but when I realized that herd mentality was in effect and that the pattern sold out in just a few days, I decided to look for a used / unabused one and then wait for a newly designed collaborative work between Marcin Slysz & Spyderco to hit the market. Well, the 2018 catalog just came out and guess what? No newer & improved SB for 2018. Therefore I'm glad that I got a used one at a decent price to give it a whirl:
Overall, not the F&F of a Sebenza and not even 90% close to it but when it comes to the blade and the steel performance, IMHO the CTS-XHP is both better with this FFG geometry than the hollow grind of the 21's and the 25's which I had owned in the past, plus easier to hone and to maintain as far as my meager honing skills are concerned.
I had two purposes when I decided to take size comparison photos with the CPK-EDC. The SB has a blade length of 3.42 vs the EDC at around 3 inches but that was not my main concern. I would've liked to see the Bowie with less belly but the EDC with a bit more belly, so basically if I had reprofiling skills, I would've reprofiled the Bowie with same same slope of the EDC's stock in order to achieve a more desirable belly! Now I am thinking that the EDC-2 will basically offer this very happy medium for me, just plotting things in my own head.
OK, I went off a tangent in that last paragraph but here is what I think regarding Slysz Bowie vs Sebenza:
If you can get a lightly used large Sebbie in the low 3's vs the NIB prices on the SB on places like eBay which are now fetching high 3's, go for the CRK as long as your maintenance skills are far better than mine. But if you can snap the SB in the low 2's as opposed to the Sebbie whether at used prices or even worse at the full on retail, you would want the Slysz Bowie. Guys, this folder is a very, very good performer and a great value in the low 2's. Quite frankly, I had always thought that it was too richly priced at just under 300 and after gauging the hardware, pivot acres and so forth; I was not wring on those point. But can it "cut" right out of the box and shave hair as compared to the Sebbies? Heck yeah!
Lastly, I recently scored a Spyderco SpydieChef by the same maker which is an excellent slicer. That one came with lockbar stick and also would not free drop after the pressure was off the lockbar. A quick dab of Sharpie to the tang and also very minimal unscrewing of the pivot screw followed by my OCD penchant for flicking took care of all that! I did not have these issue with the Bowie because it was already used and the prior owner had also dialed in the pivot but I just had to mention because the Bowie and the Spydiechef both were reportedly afflicted with the same issues outta box.
