What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Speaking of Ancient, this one has been in my pocket today! :D

I am presently without a Barlow of any kind. Although I keep looking for that mythical sheep foot main or only blade knife. I’ve been captivated by the lionSteel Dom but it’s not a real traditional knife in my opinion.
I like to see carbon steel and pinned construction even though the Dom sports titanium and M3 90, very good steel. It’s probably just me but I haven’t been able to step up and buy one because of the fact that it lacks some of the traditional characteristics that I really value.

I have enjoyed a learned a great deal about Barlows from this thread. May it long continue.

Please tell us about that handle material, Â!! Cool Barlow!!
I love it when someone respects the humble Barlow enough to Custom make one!!

Hello Charlie, Cosimo De Benedetto is a really great fan of the US cutlery and loves the Barlow.
The handle is in stag :D

You are far from alone in this way of thinking. In fact some practically live by those standards. Your right the Lionsteel Barlows are excellent knives I've owned several myself. However if your looking for a true traditional example there just not the right fit.

True. When I look at those lionSteel knives I too am impressed but they aren’t actual traditionals by my reckoning. We all have our standards and I know if I were to buy one I would be disappointed for that reason alone.

I have a Shuffler, Lionsteel's Clip Blade Barlow.
I look at it, pick it up, and think, "Dang, this is a really, really, really good knife".
And then I put it back on the shelf, because like you, I enjoy what more traditional knives have to offer.

Thanks for your insights. I know the, or any definition of “traditional” in terms of knives is the doorway to a warren of opinions. I don’t even think stainless has a place on traditionals being a relative newcomer on that scene. I will just have to wait until some traditional Barlow shows up that I can get.

I couldn't help but keep an eye out for a sheepfoot Barlow after seeing you post

Well after reading your post I couldn't help but keep an eye out for a sheepfoot Barlow for you. I found a Fighting Rooster NM condition for less then the price of the LIONSTEEL. If your interested let me know and I'll shoot U the info. :cool:s-l400.jpg
