What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Anywhooo, just a ramblin' thanks and

Nice post though :) And those pics are well worth sharing again (even if this thread I keep trying not to look at! :D )

The two blade: Even though the long pull on the master "hides" behind the pen blade it is easy to access. There is a wide swedge on the back of the pen blade that lets your thumbnail slip right to the pull!

Glad you addressed that. I'd begun to wonder after seeing pics.

I originally thought the copperhead bone was best looking, but now that I've seen finished pics of all of them, I believe the antique yellow is the best dressed. :)

So sitflyer - I suspect you are interested in Barlows with Sheepfoot blades!?
Well here ya go!

Notice, Robeson put the pen blade behind the master! Even though access to the Sheepfoot pull is quite easy because of its height.
Any opinions on that, anyone??
Should the pen always be in front, or are there reasons to put it at the back??

My preference is pen in front. I like to hold the knife in my right hand and open the blades with my left thumbnail, ready for action, just always seemed natural to do it that way. It seems awkward to me to have to flip the knife to the left hand and get to the nick...

My thoughts precisely.

Thanks Gev!

Sorry it's not to clear, Sit! But I think you are teasing ME, given the large S on the bolster!:D

Well... I don´t have so much experience with the Barlow pattern in general. I own two of them. A nice Böker Treebrand Barlow and a Hamerbrand Barlow. Both I got from very kind members here on BFC.

I like the shape of this kind of knives. Especially the ones which GEC released in these days is just great looking to me. The version of the #15 pattern with the long bolsters is just great looking.

This would be a nice knife for 2013 :)

BTW: Great pics of the Barlow pattern in this thread! Keep 'em going. I´m looking forward seeing more :)

I'd love to see a picture of your Hammer Brand, Humppa!
Have you posted it somewhere?
Please post it here, if you can!!

Charlie,
I agree with others (and it's not just for Barlow's): I prefer jack knives (of any frame, pattern and style) to have both nicks on the mark side. I like to hold the knife always in the same way, and open the blade of choice with the same move.

Those sheep foot barlows are fantastic. Pen in front is my preference as well from the same reasons as Fausto mentioned above.

That smooth Red Bone is particularly eye-catching. Rather neat slimmer 'torpedo' like bolster. I like the sort of 'demi-longpull' on this as well, curious!

The only Sheepfoot Barlow I have is from Queen and opts for a different approach. Slightly rounded Copperhead style bolster so the tang is hidden. Nickel liners, 4 brass pins though and nail nicks on different sides. I used to prefer same side nicks, but now I like having the main blade nearest my thumb, why? Don't know....:D:eek:

Regards, Will

Great thread Charlie. You should have "Blade Forums Historian" as your sig line.

I have posted these before. They now reside with a barlow collector.

NYK Co. with yellow paint on the tip and a scratch in the scale from when I opened the box. (Yellow paint wasn't my fault.)
