What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Every time I peek into this thread I run and grab my Grail Charlow - long-pull single speer in Gabon Ebony from early 2013. It is simply stunning and brings me great pleasure to carry and enjoy.

Never got my hands on one, but that long pull single spear Charlow is probably the perfect interpretation of the Barlow in my eyes!

I noticed just one minor issue with the red jigged bone Charlow I received: it doesn't snap closed. It has a good snap to full open and the half-stop but I can inch it down to closed with no snap at all. No big deal but does anyone else have this?

Did you get it fixed?

I had the same problem with my rust red sawcut razor. I oiled the pivot well and then opened and closed it a bunch of times. It now will close better but still not real snappy but noticeably better.

Haven't had time to try it yet; busy weekend. Not sure I'll worry too much about it as long as it stays closed.

I may have to mod my razor just a tad though. The protrusion (or "horn") on the top of the razor is pretty sharp and I have a feeling it will be a pocket shredder. I may have to file it down just a slight hair. Either that or carry it in a slip (which I may do anyway).

#2 arrived today....

Definitely some variation in the jigging, the one on the bottom is a little course but the color is really nicely matched on it and the fit and finish is just a hair better. I think I'll put the bottom one away for now and carry the top one for a bit.

I have noticed that also on recent runs of Barlows and #15s.
They must have changed the way they clean the knives, as some gunk is staying in the joints. Also they have gotten some knives back with very slight side-play so maybe they are fitting them tighter (thinner assembly spacer).

Either or both, it takes a little patience with cleaning and oiling most of the time. They eventually snap nicely in my experience. I haven't needed to send one back yet. I hope that's all it is with yours, addylo!

Of course I haven't handled this very latest run yet!!

I would love to see a group shot of Waynorth's Charlows - now that would be a real picture show! Probably two batches of popcorn. :D

The larger problem might be photographing a hundred Charlows at the same time and they would look like little miniature knives, all in one picture. Maybe we could wish for groups shots or group scans. :D :D

Here's about half of them, Primble. I will do something better in the future, when I have more time. I have to keep one of every variation for reference.
There have been a couple of odd ones that have gotten away!
Like one with different scales on each side!

Does anyone have any good suggestions for cleaning drool out of a keyboard? ;)

Oh my!!! I can't believe you have that many, that is an amazing collection...very cool to see all of those together.

and just when I thought I had been cured of my cartoon craze - that is just ridiculous Charlie!:eek::eek::eek::D

That just might be the most impressive knife collection that I have ever seen - and that is half of it? - I guess my estimate was not too far off!

I am glad you kept one of each for reference - quite impressive!!! - and don't forget to show us more when you get the time.;)

Aka, my beloved Harlequin, complete with my preferred pen-behind-main configuration:
~ P.

That is a wonderful threesome Pertinux - real beauties!!!

I suppose Waynorth called you out and you certainly answered. :D

I guess I did not see what I was supposed to see the first time I viewed this. I was just taking a quick break from mowing and thought these three were gorgeous examples. After I got through and came back - I noticed the Harlequin, front and back - and boy is that one to die for!

I bet Charlie gets the sniffles every time he sees it - don't you feel sorry for him? :D

Kinda hard, I guess, with a roll of Charlows that long! :D

So - I have to give another little short dance for you too P.

Thank you Jack and Gevonovich. Well the straggler 3rd Cut Stag 2 blade Charlow arrived today. I suppose I ordered more than my fair share of this run, but, please remember I was late to the party and missed out on most of those beautiful long pull Charlows - ones that I have unsuccessfully tried to acquire. I really love both of these new arrivals. :)

One of the inspirations for the third-cut Stag. Kinda looks like a great, great, Grandpa!

~P has an ear to the ground - doesn't miss a trick!!

Sarah edit's my back-label rants, and keeps my foot out of my mouth, and makes sure no TP is stuck to my shoe!! (Figuratively of course!!)
