What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

My chestnut bone Stew's Blade arrived today! My first Charlow.

Thank you Jack and Gevonovich. Well the straggler 3rd Cut Stag 2 blade Charlow arrived today. I suppose I ordered more than my fair share of this run, but, please remember I was late to the party and missed out on most of those beautiful long pull Charlows - ones that I have unsuccessfully tried to acquire. I really love both of these new arrivals. :)

Dramatic two-tone 3rd cut! Both nice and (as usual) nicely photographed.

Thanks to EVERYONE for showing me your Barlows, while I sit here grumbling and cursing because I cannot reach into the computer!!
I'll do it a little differently next time!!
There will be a next time!!

BTW, I just got my current Knifeworld Magazine, and everyone is jumping on the Barlow Bandwagon!! Bear, BlueGrass and CSC have all come out with, or "jumped up" their Barlows in the last year or so. I think in November, TC Sawyer Barlows will be 2 years old.

Nice Temp  :)

Great trio of Charlows Stephen! :)

Charlie, they have a long way to go to match up to the beauty of your Charlows! :)

I would love to see a group shot of Waynorth's Charlows - now that would be a real picture show! Probably two batches of popcorn. :D

The larger problem might be photographing a hundred Charlows at the same time and they would look like little miniature knives, all in one picture. Maybe we could wish for groups shots or group scans. :D :D

But the other manufacturers won't have the TC on their bolsters! ;):D

Last picture of my new Charlows for a while. I wanted to include the tooled leather pouch I purchased from Barry. I truly love the new pouch and part of what makes it special is knowing that one of our great members on the forum hand made this. The single blade 3rd cut stag slipped perfectly into this well made pouch and the end sits just inside the opening and is so easy to grasp and pull out. I wear jeans most of the year and I buy jean shorts with a watch pocket for the hot summers here - well not so hot this year. Today I had the 2 blade 3rd cut stag in my watch pocket and the single blade 3rd cut stag in the pouch and in the larger part of the same pocket - then I had the African Blackwood Stew's Blade in my leather belt scabbard. I was walking proud on my morning walk today!:D Get Barry (Gunstock Jack) to make you up one of these - you will love it - I will give it the Primble's unconditional guarantee of quality merchandise - for whatever that is worth!:D

Stephen - looks like you had three fine samples arrive and your 3rd cut stag handle looks exactly like the pile side of my single - we can call them brothers if you like! ;):D

I can stop buying these things any time I want. Well, as soon as my clip point third cut stag arrives in the mail...

Charlie, you're the best!

Some more pics. I have to get around to sharpening her. It came somewhat sharp but a bit uneven. Photos came out well for my cell phone.

Really REALLY great photos here. I'm scrutinizing each one and appreciating the fine detail especially in the macro shots by Paul. Tracking shows one of my Stew's blade has landed but actual deliver is still a couple of days away :( Am chomping at the bit to get my hands on it!

To many beautiful shots to comment on!

Paul
Great shots!! Really shows off the quality of the knives.

Stephen
I can't pick a favorites. This whole batch is flawless in its execution!

Barry sure knows how to work leather. Reminds me of some of my fathers work years ago.

Well, I couldn't wait any longer. I had a quiet moment tonight so I decided to open the package.

Like everyone has already said, these are simply fantastic! I'm especially loving the red jigged bone. Great job, Charlie!

And, of course, the ubiquitous and inevitable coin box images.

Kinda bummed that I managed to miss out on this run, especially those single clips in Walnut, but I'm sure enjoying all of the fine pictures here!

Thanks to EVERYONE for showing me your Barlows....

Agreed. Fantastic photographs, and a wonderful array of covers and colors.

I'll do it a little differently next time!!

What say! :p

It sounds like your barlow(s) will even arrive in Singapore before they are in certain other hot little hands much closer to home. Ahem.

C'mon, Titusville.

(All in good fun. T'will be grand to retrieve mine from you in person, at the Source.)

((But Lawd, look at everyone else getting their mitts on your razor barlows before I do!))

I noticed just one minor issue with the red jigged bone Charlow I received: it doesn't snap closed. It has a good snap to full open and the half-stop but I can inch it down to closed with no snap at all. No big deal but does anyone else have this?

It's probably just gunk in the pivot. Try cleaning it out good with soapy HOT water and a brush, working the lazy blade back and forth between brush strokes. Then make sure it's good and dry before putting some oil in the joint (hair dryer works great).

If that doesn't do it, might need to be returned to GEC. They'll fix it right up.
