What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Is there any info/meaning with pins that aren't flush with the scale? My Red bone pins stick out a little, but my new Ebony are flush.

I bet the new frame for the forum knife would work for some plus size barlows. Maybe not a big enough difference in size though?

Willy, the wood and smooth bone handles have had flush sanded pins, while the jigged/sawcut bone handles have had domed pins, as far as I know. I think it has to do with the finishing steps and not wanting to sand off the textures.

Awesome red bone on that bottom one!

The wood handled knife pins are flat because they don't have to worry about removing the saw cut pattern like they do with the bone handle when polishing it.

I think you are on to something Curt. A quarter inch is a huge difference in the OA size of a knife. Three and a half as opposed to three and three quarters means the bigger knife is seemingly about half again as large. I like the Grandaddy Barlows, but they seem a little too long, where as a stubbier knife with a nice, thick blade would really fit the bill. JMHO

After falling for the #78 I've often thought it would make a great Barlow as it seems to be a bigger version of the 15. Is the forum knife on the same frame as the 78 or is it slightly smaller?

Yeah!!!!! nice contrast in the photo as well- that's a very very nice knife you have there Payton, thank you everyone for showing these gems- you would think one would get quite sick of looking at the TC's - but oh man each knife and the way we all photograph them so differently - as well as the enthusiasm we share for being the lucky owners of these gems - this is one of the best threads ( apart from the HJ one:D )

Couple beauties from the latest run in walnut and 3rd cut stag. I love the colors and pattern on the stag.
