What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Please stay focused on knives. Travel stories need to be traded in the Lounge.

Folks, some beautiful barlows here, Two questions, first what does the acronym SFO represent. And second, can anyone point me to where to look for a single blade version with a wharnie blade?

Thanks for any advice/feedback.

A wharncliffe is not a usual or traditional blade for a Barlow, Fish.
They are usually found on whittlers, swaybacks, and some pruning knives.
Some might say I am a bit of a traditionalist, but I like seeing wharncliffe style blades on those old curved or serpentine handle patterns!
If you see one on a Barlow, it will be unusual and rare, I'd guess.

Well said Charlie. I love those serpentine Wharncliff whittlers. While I love the Wharncliff on a whittler the Sheep foot just works on the Barlow pattern better to my eye.

Thanks for the correction Waynorth, I guess I need to do some more homework, I can't say I know what the difference between sheepfoot blades and wharncliffe blades is. At any rate, I've looked on GEC's website, and although it is a poorly laid out website, I couldn't find any Sheepsfoot barlow there, thanks for the lead though Campbellclanman--I guess I'll keep searching, and it would be good for me to learn the difference between the two blade styles, I like them both! :)

How about an old Challenge barlow?

What's your opinion of a Lambsfoot Barlow?

Mr Paul Hilborn, I would like to take you to task Sir and ask where your TC knife collection shots are my friend - or have I missed them - this is something I need to see :-)

Yeah pistonsandgears - awesome old knife there Sir!

Duncan, first off...thank you;) the red saw cut was and is stunning...that was my very first TC Barlow:thumbup: I strive to be like you when it comes to generosity my friend as in just the other night in Flint Hills lost TC Barlow thread...it was you again who stepped up to help out a fellow member:thumbup:

And thank you Chris for your kind comments...that again (the GAW) was Duncan's idea. I tease him of his use of the word "Legend" but he is all of that:thumbup:

Thanks guys for the compliments on the Challenge Barlow.

Here is my set of Charlows.
