What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Evan - Thank you for the added pictures of the fine ole Russell. The last picture reveals the rich wood color.:)

Looks like some pretty knife handle material under the knife too. ;)

Thanks! The wood has some beautiful grain that is difficult to capture correctly in a picture.

That isn't handle material(although I do have some redwood burl), it is just some wood veneer I had laying around for another project I never got around to finishing... Great for backgrounds though!

Received my anniversary barlow today. It seems like GEC has really stepped up their fit/finish lately. The forum knife was really good, but this one is just crazy good. Really tight construction, flush spring including the half-stop (first production knife I've ever had that nailed that), blade centered, etc. Really happy with the awesome soup bone character I got on the mark side!

Alright, who got EARL's knife? LOL. This one gave me a run for my money. It looks like Earl loved his Schrade Barlow so much he never even used it.

Well I missed that one but I was able to nab this old HSB OVB

Glad to see the HSB went to a good home. I almost went after that one myself.

Thanks Pistons. I'm glad I was able to get it. It'll be my first true sawcut bone knife, barlow or otherwise. But I have to say "Earl's Knife" has a certain charm. I thought it would be pretty cool to see a thread of vintage knives that have been marked by they're original owners. Names carved into handles, pained knives, unique rehandles, unique reblades, etc.

I was watching Earl pretty intently. My first initial is S, so I've been hunting one of those old Schrade Barlows for a while now, but the timings not right for me right now. Gotta pay for Christmas and a bunch of hospital bills first. :\

There's a potential barlow catastrophe brewing in my life... We may have a wayward package.

Anyway, a good barlow is carried and used often:

I asked for an extra soupy bone and that is definitely what I got. No safe queens in my house, my toddler has been on an apple kick so the patina has gotten a fast start.

Lets see some more patina on the anniversary barlows!! Once the sun comes back out I will get a better patina photo.

Many eyes where on Earl:thumbup: I would have no problem telling anyone askin that I'm Earl:D:thumbup:

Character galore in my eyes:thumbup:

jkulysses: That is a beautiful collection, a dream collection! Your yellow bone inspired me to carry mine (two bladed) today, but honestly, I prefer the single blades. And you have assembled the perfect quartet!

Someday, I hope to have a beautiful single blade 3rd cut stag like yours... I will be patient... Slow and steady wins the race...

Yep! Yep. 'Saw Earl blow right through the 'Bay. I thought of going after the HSB but decided against it when I found a #15 Crownlifter and that took up the spare cash for the week. Good to see that it went to a good home.

I finally got my hands on some barlows although some will probably say a couple of em aren't so tradtional.

Was too late on the dealers when the anniversary editions were announced. Single clip long pull is my favorite style, have been drooling over the pics. Thanks to the generosity of Mark, aka clutchcarter, my Christmas is indeed Merry! HO! HO! HO!
