What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Nice Barlow there Logan, let's hope that you do not have a Barlow catastrophe.

Thanks! me too...

I think there's a lot of that going around right now.:D

I sent out a package recently, I guess USPS is taking some of UPS and FedEx's load so priority is backed up. However, it looks like that's not the problem for me. My package was delivered last Wednesday, but was left on my porch according to the delivery lady. That is not a good sign at all, being that I have three rambunctious dogs plus my brother's dog is often around. It would be heartbreaking to find a ripped up scrap of an order receipt or packaging with no accompanying tube.

I finally got my hands on some barlows although some will probably say a couple of em aren't so tradtional.

I really like the look of the squared bolster. Gives me ideas, maybe a coffin barlow.

^ Well, looks like my idea (basically) has already been done (like most ideas).

Awesome barlow you have there Dan.

Thanks. Evan (of course) did that one. It is sporting interior mammoth ivory covers and it's a very, very special piece in my collection.

I felt this old girl deserved to be documented here.

This one isn't the prettiest to be sure, but cut her some slack, she's over 100 years old!

Thought I would show a few pictures of my Anniversary TC Barlow. These came out super clean and nice.

Sorry that these ones are oriented wrong.

Nice stuff guys. I think I'll post a WIP thread of sorts but I wanted to give you Barlow lovers a preview of a little project I'm starting on. I just got an old Case Redbone Barlow which while it has beautiful covers has nary a blade left. I happened to have a Delrin Clip/Pen Case, which while patinad looks to never have cut anything. So while I consider the 70's case to be a great knife in its own right I've decided to cannibalize it in order to breathe new life into the Redbone. I'll be putting the springs and blades from the delrin Barlow onto the redbone handle. Here's a few shots so far.

So far so good? Well to be honest I already cracked the redbone along a weak point. The pins on the older redbone case were way harder to cut through than the 70's pins and all the hammering caused it to crack. I'm hoping some thin CA glue, some fine sanding and a lighter touch going forward will hold things together till I'm finished.

Wish me luck... I'll need it.

I'm sure that Evan would be willing to make another to your specs. Hope you find that wayward barlow!!

I saw that one on the exchange a couple days late. It's what prompted me to have Evan do those two for me. You have a beautiful knife there!

Good luck with your project Lemmy, can't wait to see it

Seems like a good plan. If it turns out even half as sweet as your red hot toothpick, I'd consider it a rousing success!

Great to see all the new Charlows. I really like these knives. And to think before BF hooked me I did not even own a single one.

LOL, get in line, Ed! Before I met Charlie, I thought I knew what I liked and he,,,,uh,,,,,changed my mind too!

Was too late on the dealers when the anniversary editions were announced. Single clip long pull is my favorite style, have been drooling over the pics. Thanks to the generosity of Mark, aka clutchcarter, my Christmas is indeed Merry! HO! HO! HO!

It's nice to see all this Barlow Buzz going on! Everyone is enjoying them old and new. I even like seeing caplifters on them:eek: (as long as they are not on mine:D)!

Those flat-beveled-bolster Barlows that Evan is making are sweet!
I have an old Case tested that has 'em, and it could be my favorite! At least today, anyway!!:D

I hope your parts swap works well Lemme!

Life is good!! Especially when there's a Barlow or two around!!

tstaut, that ONB is cool! I have a single blade in about the same curmudgeonly condition. Nice find!
