What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

tstaut, that ONB is cool! I have a single blade in about the same curmudgeonly condition. Nice find!

Thanks Charlie, I think curmudgeonly is about the perfect word for it. Thing is, she's still snappy and there's no reason not to drop her in the pocket now and then! Nothing like the feeling of walking around with a 100+ year-old antique in your pocket! Of all my knives, the centenarians are always just a little more special. :)

Got another gem in today's mail. Indoor photo because it's already too dark out for outside shots:

I hope your parts swap works well Lemme!

Life is good!! Especially when there's a Barlow or two around!!

Thanks Charlie! Oh it worked very well. I'll have pics for y'all tomorrow. It's finished and in my pocket. I won't diminish its beauty with a photo taken in artificial light. And yes it feels good to have resuscitated a case redbone Barlow. Lol. Have a good night everyone

Nice DE Philll!
Thanks for adding the Russell pics, Evan, That is one sweet pair!

tstaut, here's a scan of my curmudgeonly ONB. One of my older knives, alongside one of my younger ones. It is quite pitted, but works perfectly, and holds an edge forever! I knew a woodcarver who used to protect his handles, then bury his knives in damp soil until they were suitably pitted!! He said the porosity achieved in the steel worked wonders!!! Go figger . . . . .

In all the years I have known Glenn on here, I have admired his cutlery skills, but never got a chance to have him do a knife for me, until a little trade came up! I consider myself lucky to have his work now in hand!
He did a masterful job of fitting some nice John Lloyd-sourced stag onto this TC; a match made in heaven!!
GEC does not put premium Stag on Tidioutes. In fact there was a little reluctance on putting third-cut handles on the Barlows (just a little!).
But, I had to have one. Here it is, fitted to the bolsters in the best Sheffield tradition: Thanks, Glenn!

That's a beautiful TC Charlie. Glen did a great job with the new covers. I have been jealous of your knives before and am once again.
Thanks for sharing it.

Chris

I like the pins struck and peened - rather than spun if I had a choice - so I really like the job Glenn has done on the TC with Johns Stag.
