What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

With a dremel, any knife can be renamed.

(But I don't recommend it.)

-- Great stuff, Barry. Cosmetic issues, and even slight structural ones, can make a knife or knives more immediately accessible. Yours is a beautiful array, of course.

You are right Sarah! :D

Phillll is going to carve Phillll in his spear blade TC Barlow! Stay tuned! :D

The Earl Defense League has gone giddy with joy between Earl and a certain red soup bone... (And it sure is fun to watch. :D)

Meanwhile, ~P, if you are still around in this thread, I've scored a couple WLST, and will post them at some point over in the other thread. Charlie's great work is still something for me to long for. But the WLST's have given me insights into the giddiness here. Isn't this joy wonderful? Such beauty + practical usefulness. I love it. :D

In the madness surrounding a Knife Named Earl (wasn't that a Johnny Cash song???), Duncan's beautiful RedSoup, and Barry's great Seconds Collection, fell out of view! Let me offer my admiration to both of you!! Lovely Barlows, one and all!!

Seems like I had a knife named "Matt" somewhere ?? Wonder if I still own it??
This subject could be a thread on its own!

I agree Charlie. When I saw EARL up for auction, that was my thought, but it also looks to be a Schrade CutCo Barlow in amzing shape. You can really imagine Earl's pride of ownership, ssems like he was so proud of his knife he just couldn't bring himself to use it. Or else EARL was the mischievous child getting back at his dad...

This came in my mail today. It's an old Northfield that looks like it has ebony scales. These are also my first knife photos. :(

It feels and looks like a very nice little knife. Question: Is it a Barlow? Or is a "bare-head jack" sometimes the same thing as a Barlow?

I'm new, but have been reading here like crazy, taking it all in. I'm very happy with the knife whatever you all say about it - good or bad. Just want to learn and enjoy my knives.

First thing I did was drop it on a tile floor and put a crunch on a corner, so my guess is the bolster must be silver because it is so soft. Or not.:o

All I've done is drop the knife :o and take pictures. So this is how it came in the mail.

Hey BlackBrit - Welcome and very nice find there. Its a barehead jack, A barlow most typically has a long top bolster that dgoes about 1/3 of the way down the handle. Not detracting from you very nice knife, just letting you know.

Okay, thanks so much. That is what I wanted to know. So the bolster has to go about 1/3 down the handle. See - I need these things made explicit! :)

Somebody may have said that earlier in the thread, but I missed it. I really appreciate the clarification on that, and I hope no one minds me putting the wrong kind of knife in here. Maybe it should be filed under the heading "This Is Not A Good, Traditional Barlow."

I went back to page one of the thread, and now I "see" it. :o

I agree with you: it's a very nice little knife :thumbup:, even if it doesn't have long enough bolsters to be a barlow. And you should see my first knife photos ; yours look marvelous in comparison to mine :)

Philllll, that Diamond Edge is spectacular!!!!!
