What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I agree with you: it's a very nice little knife :thumbup:, even if it doesn't have long enough bolsters to be a barlow. And you should see my first knife photos ; yours look marvelous in comparison to mine :)

You are too kind! Hopefully I'll have a real Barlow to add to the thread at some point. And the photos will improve. I hope. :o

Did I see in some other thread that you've got a GEC #25 inbound? Is it (they?) the barlow version? Looking forward to seeing some photos of that when it arrives. I'll bet your photos will improve as you experiment with different shots, settings, etc. I originally stumbled across this forum about a year ago, and stayed to learn about knives. I had no idea that I'd also be learning about sharpening, photography, image-sharing technology, knife-related customs and traditions, … I had no idea what I was getting myself into!!

Yup. GEC #25 inbound, and I believe it is the Barlow version. But y'all will have to set me straight. :)

I picked up another #25 (jack-ish? Oh dear, I don't know...but it is definitely not the Barlow version) that I am loving. But then I finally found one I think is the Barlow version that I could afford and that I could win on the bay. Not the exact blade configuration I wanted though. But I like it. It should be here soon. I think I have a thing for the three inch knife, not exclusively, but with a certain excess of affection. :D

My excuse is that I am buying myself little Christmas presents... ;)

I came here on purpose because I wanted to learn about scythes. Now look where I've ended up!

But yes, the photography bit is going to have to be mastered one way or another. I read B. Levine's photographing (really scanning) knives tutorial (think it was his) and I flunked that one completely. Had to just go outdoors and do my best or it might have been days before I learned I was putting photos of a jack in the traditional Barlow thread.

In the madness surrounding a Knife Named Earl (wasn't that a Johnny Cash song???), Duncan's beautiful RedSoup, and Barry's great Seconds Collection, fell out of view! Let me offer my admiration to both of you!! Lovely Barlows, one and all!!

Seems like I had a knife named "Matt" somewhere ?? Wonder if I still own it??
This subject could be a thread on its own!

Thank you Charlie, and yes...Barry's seconds collection is something else for sure - considering they are "seconds"

Nice Barlow Philllll (with 5 l's)

Very steady hand there pistons :D:thumbup:

Man...glad all of you got your Anniversary TC Barlow's. I am still waiting for USPS to deliver.

Are poinsettias traditional? I don't think so. I read that they have been sold as Xmas decorations for about 90 years. I suppose that makes them about as traditional as Micarta knife handles, and more traditional than Delrin. I just don't think of them the same way that I do Christmas trees, Nativity displays, or sawcut bone handles on Barlows.

But I do have about 5 or 6 of the pretty little plants scattered about the house.

LOL, yeah Paul, I guess you could say I am. Also thought it was a great opportunity to throw a line out from A Christmas Story.

Meanwhile, ~P, if you are still around in this thread, I've scored a couple WLST, and will post them at some point over in the other thread.

Excellent news! I look forward to learning more about what you've found. Please do add pictures over yonder. :)

Well, you did have "Matt's Knife" at one point in the not-too-distant past-- fourth down in the second column.

Perhaps check your sock drawer? :p
