What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Gunstock Walnut Clip/Pen makes a good traditional Barlow:thumbup:

So, Paul... Did you sand it by hand, or use a wheel? I would be afraid to do something like that with a power tool. My hands would start to tremble!

Scott, no power tools here, I went slow with a small foam backed sanding block. The edge (butt) wasn't sharp or uncomfortable before but if I really did excessive cutting I could feel it. The luxury I have is that I get to use my knives daily for my work and this is just so smooth now.

I'm sure it's much more noticeable to the feel than in the pics but if it's smoother now,,,,success! Well done Paul!

Ahh, I see it now, Paul. Really great job of keeping the integrity of the handle and gaining some smoothness to boot! I can imagine on a barlow how this could be an issue if too rough, with no bolster at the butt end.

Please forgive me if this is answered somewhere in the 343 pages of this thread that I haven't completely read, but what's the maker on the D stamped Barlow? I've been hunting one of the S stamped Schrades for a little while now, and I'll be adding the D stamped whatever that is to my list as my initials are SD.

Bleh, Schrade Cut Co. made several knives for a company called
DASCO (Damascus Steel Co. - or Corp??) That Barlow is one of them.
Pretty sure it was between the World Wars.

A good week indeed, Dan. You scored some real desirable Barlows!

I like your sawcut Heirloom "Parke" Barlow! An "Earl" production no doubt!!:D

Someone asked for more pictures of a Rosewood Sheepfoot. There are some out there, but here is mine. I got a little carried away, and scanned it with the other Sheepfoot Barlows:

I can't see the etches well, so I will try another scan!

Here are some better close-ups::thumbup:

Yet again, I apologize for the "scratchy" Scanner. . .:o

Well done Dan - lovely Barlows- like the guys said - some desirables there my friend - Congratulations!

Charlie - Wow- that Rosewood Sheepsfoot is simply beautiful my friend - I think that wood is my favorite scale used yet!

I never thought I needed a sheepfoot blade until Charlie came out with the sheepfoot TC Barlow. Once I got it in my pocket, I wondered why I was carrying anything else. The two blade sheepfoot-pen combo is all I ever need, and the single blade sheepfoot is a streamlined model of Barlow efficiency.

Those are beautiful knives, Charlie. Thanks for posting the photos. I sure hope we see some more sheepfoot TC Barlows again, soon! ;)

Thank you Charlie, Dan and Scott for those beautiful sheepsfoot pics. They are mighty fine. I finally received my 2nd Anniversary TC Barlow's last night in the mail. The Spearpoint Rosewood is simply amazing alongside the red soupbone knife. I am also moving back into our retirement home tomorrow that we had been renting out for 5 years, so life is good on Okinawa. I also received another batch of 6 S&M Charlie Campagna Harness Jacks. Three (3) of these are 1 of 1 Teardrop Harness Jacks from 2005. They have handle covers of Pearl, Fossil and Burnt Stag. Beautiful beyond my wildest expectations. Another 2 are the 1 of 100 Amber and Golden Bone Teardrop Harness Jack's. Last one is the #69 Harness Jack Goldenroot 1 of 75. That makes 11 old CC S&M knives I have scored from this one honey hole. Two (2) more are in the mail. Pictures will be forthcoming but it will be awhile as my computer will be down for around 2 weeks because of the move. Christmas and New Years causes the businesses to close doors around here for awhile. So everyone...have a great Christmas and a Happy and Joyous New Year. Life is great!!

...Life is great!!

Great news, chisumr! I look forward to seeing those HJs!

Well, I finally got my paws on one of the 3rd Cut Stag Charlows! A good friend on the forum was willing to part with this one.
I know it hurt to give it up, but I vow to be a good caretaker!

The texture is very different from bone, or even the usual stag or wood handles. I love it!

The pile side picture was obviously under a red light on the Christmas tree, so the color may be a bit off...

I'll clean that dust off the blade and get some outdoors pictures later.

Now I will be dreaming of future Charlows in 3rd Cut Stag, maybe a 2015 sheepfoot?!?! And I will be on the lookout for a single blade version to keep this one company.

Life is great!
