What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

That combination is ,as some have said, very stately. Imagine ,this lowly fellow from the country has risen to walk among the aristocrats.

My franken-camillus arrived today. I gotta say the thing feels SOLID. The bone is in great shape and it feels really good in the hand.

Tha Spear blade is stamped:
CAMILLUS
CUTLERY CO
CAMILLUS, N.Y.
USA

But the sheepsfoot is merely stamped CAMCO. The Camco blade is thinner than the Camillus blade, so I'b guessing the pen blade broke off on the original Tip Top Camillus knife, and someone spliced in the Sheepsfoot from a CAMCO. The sheepsfoot spring is nowhere near flush and has very little snap.

I'm trying to decide whether I want to just rip the CAMCO blade out and have a single blade Tip Top, or go on a never ending quest for a Camillus knife of similar pattern for a donor pen blade.

Wow, that is identical to my first or second knife. Camillus made something that withstood my attempts as a kid at destroying it. Beautiful!

An evening shot...

Nice one arizonaranchman! Your posts on the amber bone Case 6375 persuaded me to get one, I received it last week and I love it!

I am trying a new wood for the next Barlow edition, called Palo Santo!
Bill made up a couple of samples - I believe one is in the mail, but here are some pictures from GEC.

The wood is very dense, like Lignum Vitae. It sinks like a stone in water!
It has a nice odor when it is sanded or burned. It is worth looking it up!!

I suspect we will get to the Speys in March or April, GB.

This is the best news of my day, Charlie! I can't wait!

Thanks! I'm really enjoying it so far. Just trying to decide what to do about the Franken-blades. The brass pivot is irksome.

Man, this is what I love about the blade forums. I have started a very small collection of knives. We all have our owns tyles of collecting. I started with, things I find interesting. With my own collection I've kind of gotten everything I care too and so my next wave was going to a traditional folder. I really wanted 1095 for the main blade and I wanted an American knife. I ended up with the utica barlow big pine because I like green. Seeing this post on the forums I'm excited to see someone else really supporting barlows and naming them as a great design. Nice post OP. This is a fun one.

Willy + Little = Art!

And I, too, appreciate the creatures who appear here from time to time. I'm partial to the furry ones who get to stay indoors at my house - see my avatar and online handle - but enjoy the amphibious and reptilian kinds, too. Mrs. Black, "Snake," that is, lives outdoors here. I get a photo of her children in the woodpile in the spring from time to time. She can't hold a candle to Little, however. Except that she is BIG. :D

I can see why Little likes that particular TC Barlow. It matches her eyes when the light hits it. :D

Good grief, Charlie, those are fantastic. A long pull sheepsfoot single with that wood... Just take all my money... all of it.
Of course, I'm also now thinking about the machine oil and smoke smell of a drill press powering through hardwood.
