What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

That is a prime example of the breed, ~P! Glad it wound up with your guitar-loving self!:D

I have loved both guitars and knives all my life; what a wonderful confluence, in this particular piece.

Thank you to Charlie, and everyone at GEC.

Beautiful.

Beautiful Ulster Primble...early on I used to mark my name on the backsprings of knives I owned...not anymore though:)

Dave sure is a dandy, Primble! I'd say you found a gem for sure. Gotta love those bolsters...mmmmmmm

Very nice Ulster, Primble! Love that script bolster!

Nice Ulster, Primble!!

Thank you all for the nice comments on my old Ulster Barlow. I have wanted a good one for a long while now.:thumbup::)

Just might be a candidate for "Most beautiful TC Barlow", at least thru my eyes.:eek::eek::thumbup::thumbup::)

That's a great collection, Evan. Nicely arranged; It would look good in a display case!

You will have another one to collect in a month or so. I am trying a new wood for the next Barlow edition, called Palo Santo!
Bill made up a couple of samples - I believe one is in the mail, but here are some pictures from GEC.

The wood is very dense, like Lignum Vitae. It sinks like a stone in water!
It has a nice odor when it is sanded or burned. It is worth looking it up!!

Well I finally got my computer hooked back up after the move. I hate moving with a passion!! Charlie....that Palo Santo wood is simply beautiful with the sheepsfoot blade. Looking forward to aquiring a few of these. Very nice!

What's this thread doing on page 2?! ;)

My Anniversary Charlow at Saltaire Cotton Mill :)

C'mon, Mark! That's painted yellow! Or some camera filter effect. That can't be the natural color of the wood!? Can it?!

Scott it is Osage Orange. Here is a pic of the pile side after I finished re-handling it yesterday. This is an indoor pic

I grew up around a lot of these trees and boy they are very hard wood! That's a beautiful job, Mark!

I remember my dad telling me years ago, "can't saw it, can't burn it, what's it good for?" Lol

It does have some unusual characteristics, but it does have some fine uses. These covers are one, fence posts and traditional bows are a couple more.

Love what you have done with this one Mark.

Chris

Mark, it is beautiful wood, and you've done a great job with it! If it were not in better shape than the blade, I would have thought it was the original handle. (Though I doubt any Barlows in the past had such wood.) You are doing beautiful work bringing new life to old traditional Barlows. I look forward to your next creation or renovation!
