What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Mark, it is beautiful wood, and you've done a great job with it! If it were not in better shape than the blade, I would have thought it was the original handle. (Though I doubt any Barlows in the past had such wood.) You are doing beautiful work bringing new life to old traditional Barlows. I look forward to your next creation or renovation!

Thanks Scott. I think the TC Barlows would look nice handled in Osage Orange.

Nice job, Mark! Great wood for a knife handle. Natural material that is hard to lose!! A step up from beloved yellow plastic!

I hope you know that I'm very impressed by your work on this knife, Mark! Didn't want you to think I wasn't.:) After I read my post from yesterday, thought I better clarify.

You're okay Perry, I knew what you meant about certain woods. I call Box Elder "Gofer Wood".....throw it in your wood burner and "Gofer More" it burns that fast. :D

Thanks Duncan! :thumbup::)

LOL, hadn't heard that one before, got an old Box Elder in my backyard, near the creek and its almost dead. May have to cut it down but save the stump for knife pictures.

At last, time and light for this Brazilian Beauty (o'erlit to show the grain):

I have loved both guitars and knives all my life; what a wonderful confluence, in this particular piece.

Thank you to Charlie, and everyone at GEC.

I just had to bump this post to the next page. I can't stop looking at your new Barlow, Sarah. I hope that every once-in-a-while, it might make an appearance on these pages. It is truly beautiful! A beautiful example of a Traditional Barlow, a beautiful example of the cutler's art, and a clear illustration of the beauty of wood handles. Along with Mark's Osage Orange above, this really opens my eyes. You see posts about how much we learn in this forum. I never expected to learn so much about wood! And I never expected to see such a pretty Barlow!

You guys are posting some nice looking knives! I am enjoying the photos. I've been swamped and the weather is not conducive to taking photos. I hope to post a few photos in the next few days. In the mean time, please keep showing off those awesome knives. We all enjoy it!

Page two!:eek:

It's so exciting seeing these Annivesary Barlows coming out- that Br. Rosewood is Stunning- but I really want to see the new Wood- that just looks lovely.

I know what you're saying, Duncan! The anticipation over new handles/knives coming out is too much fun! I must confess, I'm really looking forward to seeing the new #77s, to be released later in this quarter I think but these new Barlows will hold some special surprises as well.:)

Now I have 2 old traditional Barlows, thanks to the generosity of a fellow forum member

The new arrival, my long searched for Schrade S Stamp:

Congrats, Sean!! :thumbup:
You must be feeling good to find one after looking for quite awhile! :o
