What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Finally...

It took a long time, and I paid... well, more than enough for it, but I found it. Finally. :)

Today is a good day.

Dan, this knife really made me gasp in a good way. I would say it took my breath way but that would sound weird. :) Seriously, I reacted strongly to this photo. It is stunning. Let's face it we see many amazing knives posted every a day. Every once in a while one really grabs your attention. This one did it for me.

All of this before I read your comments. I know you are very happy with this acquisition. Enjoy it.

Dan - Congrats on the find!

That is a real beauty! PM me if you run across another ;)

Very nice Dan, congrats.
Of all the TC's I've released back into the wild that's the one I'd like to have again.

Way to go, Dan!! That's a fine knife.
I have to thank Bill Howard's vision for that color. When I was trying to determine what colors to use, I was looking at old knives, looking for the perfect color to call "Tan". Bill said he thought this Amber would be the hot ticket, and he was right. It's near the perfect color for a Barlow knife!!

(Of course there are other perfect colors also!!)

I went to the mailbox and what did I see?...
What I saw was so black.

Was it Buffalo Horn? No

Was it Ebony? No

Its... finally, a African Blackwood (the original Ebony) TC Barlow

And my favorite blade shape... Sheepfoot!

How's the f&f? I'm thinking about getting one.

Fit & finish are actually very nice. I don't have much experience with S&M so not sure how it is compared to others but I would put this one right up there with most of what GEC puts out. Most of my GEC's have maybe a little better walk and talk but that is subjective and this one isn't far behind. I also have not flushed the joint out yet which could make it just as good. Just going from half stop to fully open feels a little gritty but I think it will clean out or wear in with time. GEC should hire whoever sharpened this one though as it is sharp as a razor.

Really been tempted to pick one of these up...

Does it have a half stop?

It does have a half stop Todd. :)

Looks like I'll be putting an order soon then. Hope some are left come Sunday lol.

I have always liked this particular Schatt Barlow! Very nice, Jake, I hope to buy one someday soon, myself.

wow Dan!!!, right at the top of the page and I missed it:o Beautiful TC and congrats on finding it:thumbup:

Duncan, BEAUTIFUL Rust Red Bone Sawcut, and GREAT picture of it:thumbup:

Good week for Barlow's. Charlie and I did a little trading and I ended up with a nice red soup bone TC, great guy to deal with. Beautiful Barlow.
I then stumbled across a Colonial Old Cutler Barlow in very nice shape, really well made knife with a good solid feel to it.

Way to go Todd! I have looked high and low and then some more for one of those Blackwood TCs with either a spear point or sheep foot (single blade) all to no avail. I have found a couple with two blades but the single blade versions are highly prized and the owners/collectors do not let them loose and I don't blame them. So the thrill of the hunt continues. All the best to you I like your dogged determination and drive to find these highly collectible and sought after Barlow TCs. You give me hope!
