What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Knice Knife, Half stop. I have that in Red bone, but the Ebony really makes it a looker!

Those Camillus are great Barlow's, funny that they were just posted. I just received a model 11 Tip Top and a Model 51 Camillus Barlow's this week. The Tip Top is in excellent condition, the 51 with some blade loss but still a very usable great looking Barlow.
One thing I was surprised with, the Tip Top is significantly larger all the way around than the later 51, heavier, wider, very substantial feeling knife, quality Barlow.
Also added to my Case red bone collection with a clip blade to go along with the spear, there again, very well built quality Barlow's.

I really like these Camillus Barlows, Augie. I think you got a couple of keepers there.

Augie - That is some fine barlows :D

Great shot, Rob! That soup is super fine!:thumbup:

Thank you Perry. :thumbup::)

I'm known in my family for very rarely using bad language, preferring Dadgummit! or Goodness! to more common expletives. But today, and on many other days, I can often be heard blurting out, "DAMN! That's a nice knife, Primble!"

What Scott said!

Some Ebony and a Spear Point makes a Good Traditional Barlow :)

Looks like you are cleaning up on those fine old Barlows Augie - very nice ones too !:thumbup::D

Augie : It looks like your 51 Barlow has Bone handles. Does it ? It also looks to me like you may have an early version of the 51 because of the possible Bone and the 3 Rivets or Pins in the handles. The two 51 s I have are both non-bone and 2 Rivets or Pins. Plus the pin positions between your 11 and 51 appear to be a little differant. Are they really ?
Both of them are very nice Camillus Barlows and I think very well made. They are the Barlows that I remember from the 40s and 50s .

Primble, Charlie. Harry, Ron, Dean and Lloyd, Thank you. I'm trying to put together a nice collection of new and vintage Barlow's. You all set the bar pretty high, nice vintage ones are hard to find.
Harry, the 51 does have bone handles, second 51 I have with bone, the pin position is pretty close on both knives however since the 11 is slightly larger in all dimensions it is not exactly the same.
Thanks to this forum and threads like this I can make educated decisions on acquiring and learning the history of these knives. Thank you.

Augie, I too think you are getting in some fine knives - in fact every time you post I always look forward to seeing what you to show, I love your taste in knives, Oh man the beautiful full blade on the Camillus Tip Top, and those Red Bones are gorgeous - I just LOVE Case Red Bone from that Era.

Thank you Duncan, much appreciated. I have to agree with you about the Case Red Bones, these 1960's Barlow's are just such beautiful well made knives. I would love to find one with the one armed razor blade to have a set.

This thread has been very interesting lately, with some historic info, and some beautiful knives being shown! Thanks to all contributors!

Time for a little preview, as there is a new TC Barlow about to show up!!
