What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Sorry about the misleading picture.
The jigging is going to be the same as that on the Sheepfoot that came out recently, but with two new dye colors. We are going to try Copperhead dye on that jigging, and an Antique Green based on the Antique Yellow.
There will be an African Blackwood handle also.

This will also be my first GEC and first TC Barlow.
Going to pickup a single blade copperhead picked bone and a double blade african blackwood.

Apologies not needed Charlie, I love the direction that Bill is going with the Bone Jigging, its starting to really re-vamp the yesteryear of these neat old knives. Those Colours sound great, I am still in awe of the success of the Red Bone Soupies - now I love my Early Case Red Bones - and this to me was an extremely successful attempt to equal that process.

Perry my friend, I am with you on that - that Antiques yellow gives of such a handsome glow-Im struck deep with that!

I'm with you Perry...now I have to save my pennies:D
Well buddy if you stopped sending me all of your knives -perhaps you may not have to save  :D  its a nice complaint my friend - a very nice "complaint" :)

Are there any "looks similar to this" for the antique green? :D
Fred - my thoughts exactly - I think its going to look just great - Oh man - and I have just been spending on knives too!:( I always time it wrong ) - but in saying this - theres no way I am missing out on this.

I just need to have a look through Sues Jewelery Box to see what I can hock off to fund my next lot of knives lol:eek: ...mmmm ok maybe not, I value my own Jewels too much to do that to that wonderful Lady!

Sometimes wishes come true!! ("cough, cough!")

very nice!!!, very nice indeed charlie.

Glad you like it my friends!
You might note that the Spey is wider than the one in the Day's Work.
I have seen many old knives with extra wide blades, especially Jacks.
The theory may have been that the blade would last through many more sharpenings. We'll see - in about thirty years or so!!
:D

I am always in awe when it comes to the TC range, I do however have a massive spot for HJ's, and I must update the HJ Thread after a special knife comes my way - Oh man..that is going to be good, BUT ANYWAY.......
I came across a couple of good old I*XL's the other day, one a nice Barlow, the other a Jack, so here is the Barlow, now I love the Saw-cut Bone that I*XL used in these days, now I'm taking this knife to be around the 1940's possibly 1950's - but I stand to be corrected if anyone can shed more light, these do come up up now and then on a regular basis -even here in good old New Zealand - where our knife history is as shallow as a puddle, but in most cases the knives are basket cases, I saw this and thought that there wasnt too much loss on the blades - and grabbed it - sporting lots of Patina on the blades and the iron bolsters are in good shape, the knife is as tight as it was the day it was made.....

alongside the Jack- Ebony Covers..

The I*XL now joins my other older Barlows that a few I have bought and the others my good friends here have actually gifted me - mostly my Barlows are the newer TC range - but Oh man the early stuff boils the blood doesnt it!!

Duncan, that I-XLBarlow in saw cut is pretty difficult to find in any condition, and I would say yours has an amazing amount of blade left to it!

Duncan, great find on the I*XL saw cut and I love the rest of your vintage Barlow's. I agree with you, they early ones really get my heart racing. I would love to find a nice saw cut I*XL.
Wostenholm did wonderful bone jigging also, this one was a recent find that I posted in the old knives thread.

Thank you Perry and Augie, Augie...Dayam!!!! that I*XL is a stunner!!! I have seen a lot of I*XL's but very few with that style of Jigging - lovely stuff!

Duncan, beautiful collection. I liked that Schrade sawcut when you posted a while back. The others are just stunning.

Augie, you're really finding some real sweet Barlows. Nice hunting.

Thanks Bob, I am sure Augie knows some good knife mates -visits them a lot...and when he leaves they must often say " hey...have you seen my I*XL Barlow?...Im sure I put it over here somewhere......." :D:p

:D Too funny Duncan. Amongst my fishing buddies, we have the same thing going on with fishing lures, or plugs as we call them. That person is known as a plug Ho (whore). So now we have knife Ho's. :D
