What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Wow fantastic group of Robeson Barlows Charlie. The set of Stawberry bones taste the best. Good going on getting such a great set as these.

Thanks Russell! (I should have waited one more post to put them at the top of this page!)

Thank you GT on the forum Barlow compliment. It is so well made, fit and finish superb. I was lucky enough to get to change me sig line today since I have an Ancient in beautiful ebony on the way
Congrats on tracking down an ebony Ancient, Drew!:thumbup:

Thanks GT, there are certainly plenty of pubs which would fit the name! :D The map is from 1903 (I didn't noticed the asylum until after I'd taken the pic). It's at Middlewood, which in 1903 would have been a way out of Sheffield. I'm not sure if it's still open, but it certainly was 20 years ago. It used to be common to hear Sheffielders say things like, "He'll end up in Middlewood!" Similarly, in the 19th century, it was apparently common for people to say things like, "He'll end up under t'clock" referring to the cells underneath the town hall :D

Here's a few pics of my scratted bone Ancient making its inaugural visit to Sheffield

Looking towards the site of the home and hearth of Obadiah Barlow and his forbears.

Visiting the old (Wade &) Butcher Works.
Thanks for the fascinating asylum lore, Jack!:cool: Great shots of your scratted bone in Sheffield!

Thanks Gev!!!

And thanks for posting the group shots Ron, Gus and Lloyd, and thank you all for acknowledging my sappy remarks!:o
At 71, I don't have to be a tough guy anymore!!
Grrrrr!!:D

Anyhooo, Charlie Noyes is changing the direction of his collecting a bit, and we have worked out a purchase and trade beneficial to both of us. He has graciously sent me his Robeson Barlow collection - Thanks Charlie N!!

Here they are, (accompanied by some colorful art to offset my usual yellow background):

Charlie , I am more than happy to take care of that! ;) A beautiful bunch of Robeson Barlow! A great addition to an already stunning collection Sir! :D:D

Charlie, nice group of Robesons! Quite a few to acquire at once. I particularly like the brown sawcut ones as they seem to have such great depth.

And I appreciate so much your driving passion to bring the old Barlows back with your TC line. Just some of my favorites:

WOW, that green jig is awesome! Please please please do a Clip with those scales! I need a froggy Barlow! :D

Charlie just adding my appreciation for the TCs, they are the reason I am even on the forum in the first place. A random google search and the rest is history. Opened my eyes to this wonderfull passion for traditional knives. I love seeing the collections on this thread. And Dean I am hoping that an evergreen like yours is my next addition, beautiful picture!

Well done Ron

Charlie, that is quite some collection there! :)

I feel a little foolish! But proud too!!

It is tears of joy I shed this morning, over the love you all share for these Barlow knives!

Using them daily as well. People spending extra time and money finding a rare one - it is all overwhelming!

No need to feel foolish Charlie, only pride! I can say w/o a doubt that I wouldn't have a Barlow in my pocket right now if it weren't for you and this thread! And I wouldn't know about Palo Santo, and chatoyance, and...Cheers to you.

That's a well-traveled Ancient, Jack, and continuing!
Thanks for the bump, Ron!
Nice group, Dean!

Thanks for the comments Fred, GT, Drew, Brad and everybody!!

Charlie, great group of Robeson's, thats what I like about this thread the most, seeing these amazing vintage Barlow's.

Nice Sheepfoot, John!
- the nice thing about that Noyes group is that all the usual main blade options are there including a Spey, if you check both pics!! Speys are typically the most rare!

I truly love a spey, especially the LP version on the New Days. I'd love to see a LP spey teamed up with a clip like the double-blade version of the Day's Work (in red sawcut, since I'm dreaming here)

After seeing all of these beautiful examples I definitely feel like I need to add one of these to my collection.
