What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

These, perchance?

That horsecut bullet makes me weep for my piddling little collection. :sorrow: :sulkiness: :greedy_dollars:

Fantastic knives, @pertinux.

Dean Your Case Barlow is indeed a terrific knife. Paul is a friend and a very generous person! :)

Primble - nice soup buddy :D

Its a good day here at Bible college... A new Barlow, and a new Greek New Testament, (both are used, but new to me)!

The words are Greek to me, Ben. :p That 494 is heavenly though! :D Been trying to get a good example myself without being put through the wringer...

Are the 494's less common? I got mine in trade, so I don't know.

If I were to hazard a guess strictly from my anecdotal experience, I'd say the 494 (sheepsfoot master blade) is somewhat rarer than the 492 (spear master) or 493 (clip), but the 495 (one-armed man) seems to be the hardest to find in good condition, at least for me. For as much as I love Barlows, the only Boker example I have is a 495 with orange+brown sawcut scales of some kind. It was the second Barlow I carried, after a spearpoint Anton Wingen of indeterminate age.

I keep coming across and ultimately losing out on these Boker 49x's but the typical reddish-brown Delrin examples are almost always available somewhere. I have begun a focused hunt for the cleanest 494 possible without breaking the bank. If I find it before this thread is locked I will post some photos.

That's cool. I have loved carrying it over the past few days. Its a great little knife, I just wish I could get it rehandled in ebony or stag.

I know around here on "the porch" we have a number of wizened individuals who can assist with that. I have a few Delrin-handled Barlows I count among my favorites that I figure one day might be candidates for refitting in a more "exotic" material (anybody want to take on re-handling a nice Western in ram's horn? :p).

Love those well-done TC "portraits", Rob, Gus and Dean!!

And thanks to Kootenay Joe for this lovely gift!!
Q.What makes a Good Traditional Barlow?
A. One given by a friend!!
And a nice one at that. This one has the earlier square-shouldered sawcut bone handles, and is in good, snappy condition! It's real Keen!

I was going to get it done by glennbad after Christmas Break, but car troubles, textbooks, and church donations took priority. Maybe I can scrape something together over the next few months to get it done!
