What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I
I too noticed the Gabon compared to the first shipment of Ebony, and wondered why Charlie was showing us the Spearpoints- I didnt click about the spearpoint finished in the new Ebony!!! Charlie- how many spears were completed using the Gabon?
Im blaming the hospital drugs :-)

Duncan, the picture-- and the very notion of gabon-clad two-bladed spear barlows (got all that?) boggles minds more clear-headed than yours. And some which are fuzzier even without hospital drugs. :)

(Keep getting well.)

Hope that Gabon keeps tweaking your interest, Duncan! A sign of one who is healing!!

GEC Bill was making some Spear Boy's and mentioned I had a few pieces of Gabon, and other Barlow parts - enough for 9 Barlows with Spears! An offer NOT refusable!!
Not enough for everyone, I am going to have to devise a lottery or something similar.

What to do? What to do? Hmmmmm. . . . . . . . . . ?

I love the image of Charlie at home in his Mickey Mouse hat, working away with his Build Your Own Barlow! kit. ;)

Haha, now that's an image I won't get out of my head for some time ;)

I'm sure Duncan has dibs on one, but I wouldn't mind having one of those lottery tickets :D

I'd like a ticket to that lottery please. :)

I cant see that I have dibs on one, I truly feel that there are others out there far more deserving and whom contribute with Charlie...gees off the top of my head I could name at least 10.
Let alone a couple to be "stashd away"
I consider myself pretty darned lucky to have 2 spearpoints and that my mate Fes has one......that's pretty awesome in itself ( my Ebony and Sues amber Bone are just fantastic.)
Great thread.

Duncan, glad you are posting and feeling better my friend!!!

Keep on keepin on :D

Paul

The thought of an ebony spear makes my head swoon :p

If it goes, add me to the lottery...Please.

Thanks....Russell

I didn't realize you had a piece of CSC Eric.

Very nice Barlow you've shown above. Jade G10 covers sound kinda cool. Give us a look when you get a chance.

Not piece, or even a crumb Ed, just a lowly cutler :D

Those G10's should be going out this week, I'll see if I can't snap a pic when they're done.

Charlie, that gabon looks sweet!! I'm with you on the shield ;)

Oh, ok, Eric. Looking forward to the pics if you can get them.

This may come as heresy to some, but I picked up the recent issue of Tactical Knives, and Steven Dick wrote an article on daddy barlows. Not bad, he referenced the Queen Dan Burke large barlow and the Case granddaddy barlow, stating that he bought a Case granddaddy barlow when he was a kid for the princely sum of 3 bucks (a large amount to a kid back then). Wasn't a bad article. Nice to see the barlow get some exposure. Maybe someone will trade in their super duper one handed wonder for a daddy barlow ;).

What was also nice is that he wasn't
a Queen Burke (discontinued) or the Case (the granddaddy barlow hasn't been that easy for me to find, at least). The article was called Classical Tactical, but I guess we'll take it where we can get it.

I like the looks of those Canal Street barlows.

I have a Colonial Master Barlow that is 5" closed. Sure it sold for not much when it came out.

Here's an old KUTMASTER Barlow that has some real nice brown sawcut bone covers---similar to the recent TC Clip Barlow?

Notice how high the nail nick is on the Spear, I like it

The Spear has a half stop whereas the Pen does not

F&F is pretty good on this old Barlow. I really like the bolsters.

Sarah I was just teasing and having fun at my own expense. No worries.

I didn't take any pics of the barlows I saw in all of the antique shop booths/cases/stalls. Most of them were either Chinese made, branded Barlow on the bolsters. Or, they appeared to be Colonial or Providence RI. The next time I am up that way, I may ask to take a look at them. Must have been about 15 scattered amongst the shops I stopped at.

OH Baby!, I love that Barlow Paul, I personally think Kutmaster rock, everyone of my knives from them is a beaut! and this example is certainly an outstanding example!...simply beautiful!!
Whats the size of that lovely thing?
