What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I can't wait to see the 14 barlows come to fruition Charlie.
Here's a teaser for an Ken Erickson Barlow arriving to me this week. It sports sawcut antique Schrade bone done by one of my favourite makers/one of the best period correct makers in my opinion. It should be just a touch larger than the no.14's at 3 1/8" closed length. :D

Whoaaa! Now that's a nice Barlow. Well done Tim. Well done Mr. Erickson.

We are going ahead with the #14 Barlows!
Since they are fraternal twins with the Lick Creek Boys knives, I've decided to call them Lick Creek Barlows.
They will have TC bolsters, a smaller version of of those on the #15s.

I think making them easy to anticipate, we will follow the pattern of the older siblings - the first ones will have long-pull spears, and saw-cut handles, with some soup-bones. I'll make a larger run so they will be a little easier to get.

Off we go! We should have some by Rendezvous time in August!

Leaving for Oregon in the AM, so back to packing!!

That is great news!:thumbup:Any chance their older brothers will also re appear this year? They are on the harder side to come by.

Very nice soup Armando.

Here's some photos of what arrived today. Fantastic snap, walk and talk on this piece. I love Ken's work for how well they fit in/how period correct they are.

For those of you wondering the size on a no. 14 vs a 15.
Here's a pretty accurate comparison between the two.
The no.14 will be 3.07" closed, this barlow is 3 1/8" closed which is 0.055" larger than the 14.

The 14 (or that gorgeous Erickson) sounds like the perfect sized Barlow for me! I purchased a Queen Barlow last year from KSF because the site had them listed as 3 ¼". To my dismay, it was a regular 3 ½" Barlow. 3 ½" is my 'limit' for my traditional folders, and I was hoping for a smaller Barlow. So here's to hoping I can get my hands on a #14 TC!!

Marvelous picture of two beauties,
and thanks for showing this comparison!
I didn't know Erickson knives so far, are these nowadays made?

Thank you NB. Ken is a custom one man show/maker. This is an older piece of his. He does still make knives but at the moment he's taking a break. You can see more of his knives in this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/711933-Ken-Erickson-Knives-A-Retrospective?highlight=ken+erickson+knives

I think the no.14 Barlow that Charlie comes out with is going to be perfect for you Luke. It's well enough blade to get some work done while still retaining that small convenience factor. :)

Here are three Barlows I found at the OKCA show recently. I sure didn't see very many vintage Barlows for sale. From the top Simmons (EC Simmons), HBS & Co. and a Remington with some sort of white synthetic? handles.

Great patina, Jon! That flashlightlight is awful shiny though!!;)

+1 More 15 clips! I have an addiction and the secondary is awful. Here's a pic for reference! :D

I share your love of single clips, WD!!

Nice finds!! There was indeed a shortage of cool vintage Barlows at the show, Lloyd - it wasn't me!!

Lloyd, good finds, good vintage Barlows are tough to find, I think they were an inexpensive knife made to be used and that is what they did. Seems there are quite a few out there with blades worn down to nothing.

No show for me unfortunately but did manage to add a few this past week, first a Delmar, they don't seem to crop up all that often, pre WW2 from what I can find out. this one has had a broken pen removed and turned into a single blade.

Then added a Queen made Robeson, pretty well made knife,

And last a vintage well used Queen with brown saw cut bone handles, still has pretty full blades but roughly sharpened, these date 30's to early 50's,

The Queen was added to the Barlows I use for EDC, it is currently in my pocket, some days will take these Case's, all 3 are well worn but have many years left in them.

I can cut either hand, Jon, but used my left to show the blade for the smartphone! A poser (on rare occasions!).

Thanks for the copper lesson - I must fondle my Maratac more often!

I am planning a chicken soup with that Canny Chicken - soon!

Wow, beautiful Barlows, Tim, Lloyd, Fred, Augie and Jon...

A long sought after TC arrived today, I'm very happy to own this beauty:cool::thumbup:
