What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

It's a Robeson 512224 made by Camilus somewhere between 1965 and 1977. 9" oal 5" closed 4" blade with smooth bone covers, brass liners, nickel silver bolsters not sure of the blade steel but believe it to be carbon.

I have the smaller cousin of that "granddaddy" sized Robeson, a #521179 Barlow, (regular sized; photo a few pages back), same blade profile, same lined bolsters but in Delrin. Earlier non-Camillus Robeson Barlows I've seen had rounded bolsters, so these CC-made versions are rather distinctive compared to those. Nice find!!

Nice! I'm encouraged by the fact that I guessed right about the origin (I was convinced it was Camillus). I have what I believe is a black Delrin version of that same knife, only not even in the same ballpark in terms of condition. I am considering a slight reprofiling of the blade, if not an outright rehandling, but all the telltale signs from your knife are there and would remain.

Now if I could only get a NOS version. :D

And you were right! I posted a photo of mine on that "other" forum, which has a Robeson thread, and it was identified by Robeson gurus as CC-made after '65, so fits right in with what r redden said above. I guess the older knives are more desirable to some, but I'm jazzed to have a Camillus-made version.
If only any of us could find a NOS version!!

If I manage to swing one (pending an email reply at this point) I may know where there's one more. :D

A little dessert infused with cinnamon, honey, caramel and brown sugar after your main course of delicious Lick Creek Barlow? That's what these saw cut bone and smooth bone handle cover colors on these vintage Barlows remind me of.

Cool, good luck with that! Give a shout if it materializes.

Expect a "yea" or "nay" shout by tomorrow some time. NOS Camillus-built Robeson daddy Barlow incoming. :D :D :D

Outstanding lineup of old bone Barlows, Lloyd. I was remiss in excluding you from the "Barlow Yodas" in another thread. I won't make that mistake in the future. :o

I'm really excited to see mine in person. Will definitely be bringing it to the Rendezvous.

You guys are making me miss the Barlows I've parted with...

Sorry I have to ask but I'm curious; which Rendezvous? There are various Rendezvous' listed all over the country at various times, which are you referring to.

The Antique Yellow sawcut handles vary quite a bit - from very dark brown (a few), to quite yellow with a darker streak down the middle (most).
They ran short of Amarello (Yellow Heart), so they are filling in the gap in the order on the two blades, with Gabon Ebony.
I can't wait! Many of you will get them before me, so please post them!!

Is the antique yellow a smooth bone and missing from the picture? Im thinking you mean the copperhead sawcut varies alot? And is that a single blade with Ebony?? Soo many questions ...so close to being answered! There is hope!

I was wondering that myself Ramrobmb because I have a Antique Yellow smooth bone ordered.
you can see the photos of these handles on the GEC website in the what's happening section and they look just as Charlie describes them but like you say these are not smooth bone so I dont no what's happening lol

Those are all looking mighty good Charlie. Always a good uplifting read on them TC tubes that I can't help but smile when I read it. :D

I'm loving the Lick Creek Barlows. The whole package is great! This will be a great opportunity for me to finally participate in this thread that I follow daily...lol. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these little fellows!

I am having a hard time picking favorites out of those. All so nice!
Which one do yall think will be the most sought after.

I was looking forward to the copperhead sawcut the most followed by the smooth white but that amarello and black cherry turned out really nice.

The etch looks really good on these too.

It looks like there's a satin bolster finish on the yellow heart, I always like the way satin bolsters look. These look great! I hope these aren't too small, the 18s were just too small for my taste. Even if, these would be a beautiful display piece. Better yet I hope I can find one to use!

Charlie, I always enjoy the packaging as well. Well done Sir!

Lloyd, those are beautiful old Barlows!

One of the Camillus builds? I had a bit of an inkling but I couldn't be sure without seeing it open. :o A few Robesons have popped up recently, I'm glad to see them getting around now. I'm after one myself, at the moment, thanks to a pointer from r redden.
