What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Thanks for the enlightening comparison photos with #15 TC Barlow, Coyote, and #25 Barlow, Dean and BullRome, and congrats on your new 14 Barlows!!:cool::thumbup: I have a pretty good "feel" for the size of the Coyotes and the 25s, but until now didn't realize the size of either version of the TC Barlows (which is really silly regarding the 14 Barlow since it's the same frame as the Coyote, right?). I'd always had the impression that the 15 was larger than it apparently is! :o

- GT

The 15 is 3 1/2 inches while the 14 is 3.07. So, the 14 is actually .07 inches longer than the 25 and about 1/3 of an inch longer than the Coyote. The 15 is a pretty standard size as Barlows go.

Thanks for the numbers to supplement the pics, Dean.
Sometimes I get quite confused about all the variety among traditionals; I don't know why I thought earlier today that the Coyote used the #14 frame!:o

I get my shipments after the dealers orders have been filled. The SFO is my doing, and GEC ships directly to the dealers. The order never comes out even due to the vagaries of production, so I order extra, and get the "left-overs", so to speak.

Ah! Of your personal examples then. Thank you.

Some photos can be deceptive as to relative size of the knives when they are positioned in front of each other. The 14 is a smaller knife than many realize.

My cell phone camera sucks...but the covers on the Sawcut #14's are neat!

Nice photos everyone, both the TC's and the vintage Barlows.

Mine arrived today, Charlie and GEC did a great job on these, they are about as small as I want to go in a knife, glad I got the 2 blades, little bit more hand filling. I took pictures of them next to a vintage late 1800's Barlow, almost the exact same size.

Very nice Augie. I too got the 2-blade Yellow wood, and Blood Cherry as well. Days are going to slow waiting for mine.
I too went with the 2-blade for a little extra width in the hand. That Yellow Wood looks amazing with the satin bolsters. Those should age very well.
Thanks for sharing.

Some nice Ragg-iness on that one, BullRome!

Alchemy1, beautiful example of the Copperhead Sawcut Ragg Bone! And thank you for the comparison shots! Very helpful! (I'm really hoping I like the size of the #14; between the TCs and regular versions, I have... well, let's say "a few" on the way.)

Size reference pics. Compared length wise to minimize visual illusion.

And that right there shows exactly why the #14 sized Barlow is exactly what I want! Last year I purchased a Queen Barlow from KSF because it was listed as 3 ¼" overall closed length. When it arrived it was 3 ½"! It was just a tad too big for my needs. I can't wait to get a 14!

Beautifully designed and perfectly executed. I am very happy and was lucky to get some nice ragg on both sides. Thank you Charlie, GEC and the distributors.
