What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

To continue, this one has some serious Ragg bone going on.

Wow. That's the Ragg bone I've been waiting to see. Dean, she's a beauty!

Well done Charlie, and well done GEC, these look to be splendid little barlows!

It wasn't until I saw you post this image that I realised that the TC bolster stamp had been slightly changed. I would have expected the old stamp to be used again, the bolster isn't lacking in the real estate - any idea why Charlie?

This coyote image concerns me, I gave away my coyotes because they were just so small and thin, I hope these are a little more substantial in hand than the 'yotes are  :D

My #14's arrived today. They are beautiful! I added a #25 Barlow for scale.

........and with that image of the #25 involved I'm back on board :)

Do you prefer blondes...
...or brunettes?

Wow, that is cool. I'll be interested to see the variation in the amount of "ragging" in these guys. I guess, just like with stag, some will have more "character" than others.

Loving the blondes being posted. They really show off the character of the bone and the saw marks.

Oh wow, what a great photo! You can see the ragg in all its glory. Glad it didn't get polished off for the folks who got 'em.

Rey, I missed out on my 492 but I got the Wiss. That's a good photo of your 493 for comparison's sake, might you take one with the blades open if'n you get a chance? :D

As i understand it......The tooling for the bolster (when pressed and formed) has the positive relief of the TC in it. So when the bolster is formed the TC is printed/sunk at the same time. Thus different tooling for the #15 and #14 bolsters. I think anyhow.

As always, Atiger, some absolute knockouts you have there regardless of your preference. Do you have an idea of the age of that top natural bone Belknap, with the "Bluegrass" stamp? I've got a similar one (though in a condition that doesn't even deserve to be in the same breath as yours) that seems to elude a firm date range according to my research.

It has the 1940-1968 Belknap Hdw & Mfg Co. tang stamp but that's about the best I can do in determining its age. It's general good shape would lead me to believe its closer to the end of the manufacturing run than the beginning but I haven't discovered further information to help me out.

Thank you, that helps. The one I have is a bit of a mess but the stamps overall seem really deep and unworn. It's too bad the blades proper weren't left that way. '40-'68 is a good starting point. It's a shame there's not a whole lot about the production of the Belknaps online. Maybe some of the posters nearby have some brick and mortar resources we don't necessarily have.

Wow. Very pretty. That's like a single-blade new version of the Russell I carried just today:

(Didn't have any suitable solo shots, pictured with my own "ragg bone" XTRA Barlow.)

Progress on this one turning blonde for ya Jake. Time in the pocket and out in the sun has the antique amber/tan dye in the bone wearing away.
It's roots are showing

Makes sense, thanks for that mate :)

Yellow Heart Lick Creek next to Osage Orange for size and color comparison. This Yellow Heart is to die for. I was shocked at how beautiful the wood is when I first got it out of the tube. It absolutely glows!

Thanks for the enlightening comparison photos with #15 TC Barlow, Coyote, and #25 Barlow, Dean and BullRome, and congrats on your new 14 Barlows!!:cool::thumbup: I have a pretty good "feel" for the size of the Coyotes and the 25s, but until now didn't realize the size of either version of the TC Barlows. I'd always had the impression that the 15 was larger than it apparently is! :o

Congrats on your impressive collection of Barlows, Atiger, and thanks for the fascinating photo.:thumbup: I've always heard that gentlemen (and gentlewomen, presumably) prefer blondes, so I guess it reflects badly on me that I'd prefer one of each! :D
