What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

My Grail Knife arrived, Ebony Single Spear Charlow. I blame this thread. Thank You Barlie!

Awesome... I am glad you have your grail knife, I too absolutely love my Ebony Barlow, its a beautiful carry, I can get the blade hang-of-a-sharp, its the single blade version, from the first batch, and is a keeper for sure!

I go back and forth between the single blade and double blades. I kind of feel more secure with the 2 blade in my pocket, but the for actual in-pocket carry, the single blade cannot be beat for its slim profile. It's hard for me to choose between the two because they are both such great knives. Often times, I will just take both along for the ride. I also kind of like the aesthetics of the 1st run 2 blade spearpoints compared to this last run (not sure why that is).

Thanks again for sharing your charlow pics, jon! That Gabon Spearpoint is a keeper for sure, and the bone marrow one is beyond intriguing. Very nice!

thanks for the kind words, I also really appreciate your photos
regarding 1st run 2 blade spears, you may be preferring the aesthetic of the nail nick with the pen in front
So, are you carrying your Charlows in separate dedicated pockets?

Im using one of these cover slips so I have the option to toss in pocket with keys and change:

Nooks, crannies, and coloring all come together on these Soup Bones (?). Another winner, says I.

Two things I wonder about.
1. What a Covered Wagon cigar tasted like
2. What Mr. Charlie has up his sleeve for the next permutation of.....THE CHARLOW.

I've never seen a Covered Wagon Cigar! I hope to, but the box is better for your health (as long as you don't smoke it!).
The box looks like a good home for knives resting before the next pocket journey! Glad you like the knife, Rob.
We are just talking about the Sheepfoot TC Barlow now. Out of respect for collectors, I will produce no more Spears or Clips for at least one year.

Glad you got them and like them Jon!!

Nice going, Sheila!

Marsh Wheeling cigars were the original "Stogies" named for the Conestoga Wagon. It is said that the wagon drivers preferred the Marsh Wheeling "Stogies". Made in Wheeling,VA. Now Wheeling,WV.

Now "THIS" is Stag, the way Stag was meant to be. :) Reminds me of some of those old single action Colts with custom Stag grips. ;)

Nice shot of some nice knives there Jon, I didn't realise that Soup Bones were out yet?, your clip S/B looks fantastic!, and it takes a lot of knife to beat that ebony Spear, I always have the extreme trouble of trying to name my favourite knife, but my Ebony single Spear, and my Red Boned Clip are in the favourite of all tim favourites that's is a definite!
Well done my friend, that looks great!

I've got some of those barlows. I have to say the lines are on the one hand classic and on the other just perfectly proportioned. The boy's knives are close and I have a couple of those as well. But the barlows are just really outstanding; I count myself very blessed to live in this time where I could own these wonderful knives.

Here's the problem: while the single blade is certainly a slimmer carry, I personally use the smaller pen blade more often. For opening taped up packages and zipping open cereal boxes, I prefer the easy handling and more maneuverable pen. So it really is a tough decision.

I don't have the single blade but I am with you, the pen blade on my Charlow sees maybe 78.8% of the action.

Here is my Ebony wood collection. From left to right: Gabon Ebony Clips (1 and 2 blade), Gabon Ebony Spearpoints (1 and 2 blade), Macassar Ebony Spearpoints (1 and 2 blade)...

Wow, very nice collection you have there. It still bugs me that I was too late for the one on the far right, but I'm quite happy with the bone version.

But you know that it's not complete yet? I heard there are a couple of gabon ebony spearpoints with mark side pen blades. ;) :D

Very nice collection!! They look good sitting on a Cherry(?) background also!!

My "Soup Bone" single blade Spear just got here, and it's amazing! I REALLY like the bone. I like
the texture and color. It might just be my favorite bone yet!! GEC did a great job matching up the "Soup Bone" on this one. Thanks Charlie
for yet another amazing Barlow! No pic's yet, got dark before I could get some made. Post some tomorrow...

Thanks for the compliment! The one on the far right is definitely my favorite of the bunch. It is also the last one that I received which completes my collection. If I had to keep only one, this would be it.

I also heard about the gabon ebony spearpoints with mark side pen blades and would love to get my hands on one or two! This most likely will not happen because I also heard there were only like 8 or so made.

I actually prefer how the mark side pen blade 1st run TC Barlows look as opposed to the 2nd run of spearpoints. I like the way both of the blade's nail nicks are on the same side. I think this adds a visual flow of lines that is aesthetically more pleasing to my eye.

Very nice collection!! They look good sitting on a Cherry(?) background also!!

Thanks, Charlie! It wouldn't be possible if it weren't for you.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of wood the table top is... I'll have to look into that.
