What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Every once in a while, a "second" comes off the bench at GEC, and I usually buy them.
Sometimes it is a slight variance in the handle covers. GEC is proud of how well they match the handles, but the Bone handled knife here must have been the last one assembled before lunch!
Beautifully made, just mismatched handles. Maybe it'll be worth a zillion dollars some day - like a postage stamp with the airplane printed upside down!!:D

The other knife in the picture is a "Thank You" knife, I think for ordering so many Barlows and being a friend to GEC!. I owe that one to all my good friends here who enjoy the knives!
The handles are pre-ban xxxxx stuff.
Nice subtle features in it!
For your Saturday viewing pleasure. . . . . .
Thanks GEC, and my friends on this Forum!

The mismatched knife looks good to me and the one on top ain't bad either. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Have a great day,
Jeff

Wow, Charlie! The pre-ban XXXX is incredible! Very nice indeed. The mismatched one looks like they had two odd frame halves left over and made a knife of it. It reminds me of the "magic" knives with two different colored handles. "Look grandson, it's brown, now it's red...." A unique knife for sure. :)

Finally, I have a Charlow of my very own! This one is also a second, due to its mis-matched handle cover coloration, but I don't mind at all. I really, really like this barlow, and it's been in my pocket constantly since it arrived.

Thank you, Charlie!!!

Here's a pic of my new 'Precious,' with a photograph of my actual Precious, my lovely lady.

When I first saw that picture, I was thinking it was a retro treatment of a current photograph (making it "nowtro"-- an A Mighty Wind reference ;))-- very cool! Nice composition of the photograph and your knife as well.

Now I want to see the other side of your "mismatched" knife. :)

Great morning!

Hmmm, I read that the knife is a thank-you to Charlie. Sure looks like his knife to me!

Wait-wait-wait.

Charlie!

DON'T BOIL THIS ONE.

Yes Alex, please show us the other side!
And that's a nice portrait indeed!!

No vinegar anywhere near that one Sarah! And you are right, that XXXXX knife is not going anywhere soon!!

That pre ban is outstanding! What a wonderful thank you from GEC! And another thank you for making the Barlows happen.

Thanks, guys.

Sarah, no retro treatment there, just a snapshot before a recent performance, while she was already all done-up in costume.

Charlie, I'll snap a photo of the other side in the daylight tomorrow. The pile side is a bit darker, sure... but not too far out of the range that would be "acceptable" to most folks, I'd imagine. There is a faint line in the bone, running from the center pin up toward the bolster, which may be a hairline crack... but I'm not positive, and it's tough to see. Either way, in my eyes it's "character." ;)

That Pre-ban sure is a beaut...now it's got me wondering if I can find someone to put some mammoth on one of these for me...hmm...

Nice pre-ban Barlow Charlie, and the mis-matched one certainly doesn't look too bad either :)

Ooh, the off white handles make that one the cream of the crop!! Nice of GEC for for putting that together for you Charlie.

Just received two more Barlows in yesterday's mail, they are making up quite a group.

That Pre-ban Barlow is gorgeous! I also really like the mismatched handled one a lot. I think it adds a very good amount of character.

Below is a photo of my 2013 single spearpoint in Gabon ebony wood next to my 2012 Macassar ebony wood. The lighter grain in the MAcassar realy stands out in the sunlight. It has golden hues to it when viewed in the right light which I find very appealing...

They do look nice in the sun, burnside!

And I want to thank everyone for enjoying those special Barlows with me!

And Duncan - you are never bad!! If you change, this place will never be the same!!!!!!!!!

I keep coming here and always find something to drool over.
Thank you far sharing all these wonderful pics. The Barlow is obviously a must have. Now, which one(s) to choose?

The barlows in this thread are eye popping. What a great variety. Here's a few of mine I hope you like them.

Walking along in the woods today, I kept seeing this picture in my mind's eye:

What a pair! Add my appreciation and congratulations to you for having the knives now, and your heart to pass them along to your sons.

Also among my ramble's ramblings, a return to the dual-covered barlow:
After fumbling to capture the differences in cover coloration between some of the variations of Saddle Brown and Rust Red, I submit that this knife is the perfect solution for those who can't decide. ;) I especially like the view above-- so cool!

Jon_Slider, I like the golden crescent. :-)
