What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

This Amherst Cutlery slim barlow is about as perfectly made folder as I've handled in a very long time, elegant and also timeless in looks. I added a braided leather fob on to the hidden lanyard pin they placed at the end of the knife.

Well with thanks to Jack Black Jack Black and some great advice from him, I picked up this lovely Joseph Rodgers barlow on my trip to Sheffield yesterday.

It’s a real beauty. Although only clad in black delrin (others in the shop had horn, rosewood and stag) it’s super smart and the aesthetics are spot on for a 3 3/8 knife. The slightly squared-off butt design works very well.

It’s also as nice in hand as any knife in my collection - and that is saying a lot.

Thanks to Jack’s advice I went to the Famous Sheffield Shop and they had about 60 knives on display that I was able to inspect. This was the knife I kept coming back to, so I selected it over some other really choice knives, including some nice lambsfoots and other traditional patterns. The knife that you can’t put down is the one to buy!

A few more shots of that slim daddy barlow, shows nicely centered blades, hidden lanyard bar at the end, I added that braided leather lanyard on there, the metal bead is held in place by a wedge of rubberized cork slid between the two pieces of leather and the bead pulled down tight over top of it, stays in place nicely and avoids an ugly knot to stop it from falling off.

Here you can see how the tang ends are machined down to ease opening and closing without scraping the blades inside, nice touch. Pulls on both blades are a moderate 5 with a solid snap at the opening.

Nice knife, blades are ground down fairly thin, not super thin but both arrived razor sharp, a nice surprise to receive :)

That’s a beautiful knife! I’m about to head over across the pond myself, but sadly I’m not going to make it to Sheffield. Jack’s knowledge of everything has been incredibly helpful. I’ll be on the Isle of Arran and in the Lakes Disrict, trying to be outdoors as much as possible. I’ll bring a SAK, and maybe look in some antique shops if I have time, but with the wife, I’ll have to be discreet. I’m sorry that we couldn’t all meet up! Enjoy your trip!

Fantastic knife Gary!!! Thanks for showing it!
If it's knot too much trouble can you share were you got the bead. :)

Thanks D Dschal , that sounds a good trip. I haven’t been to Arran but my wife went there last year and she enjoyed it. I might add that this trip has felt a little odd without a knife in my pocket - and I feel so much better since I picked up that barlow!

It would have been cool to meet up with you and Jack! I will post a few pictures of my humble SAK where I am for the first two weeks of August, but I’m going to miss my usual selection of knives! Have a great trip Camillus Camillus !
