What pattern would you like to see in 2016 as the Trad Forum Knife

I don't think I'm biased one way or the other. The internet has a way of breaking down borders, and we have a lot of active members from all over the world.

(If we get a knife this year :o), our pickins are slim for US manufacturers. Aside from Case (who even Charlie couldn't get to respond), we already have examples from the rest.

I think it would be really cool to have a non-typical pattern from some other part of the world, and would love to see more examples in this thread!

Hey, if the world is our oyster, then I suggest Taramundi!

I have been talking to Barry and GEC about doing a Forum knife for this year.

I'd like to point out that Barry went above and beyond the call of duty for 2015, and put in hours of work, and some significant risk, for no money!
He is understandably reluctant to do it again, so I am trying to find a way to entice him, and to provide a knife we all could love.

For many of the past several years, many have longed for a good old Scout knife. I also have longed to make one. Making one would pull me back into the annual project with enthusiasm intact.
Bill shook his head at that one, pointing out that a four-bladed knife would be quite expensive.
He has traditionally given us very generous price breaks on knives with fewer blades - the single blade stag jack was a killer deal a couple of years ago. He says his risk of losing on a 4-blader goes up exponentially because the knife is so complex.

I tend toward the Go Big or Go Home philosophy, but that is a lot to ask of friends!

Nonetheless, I have a proposal!!:)

Damn the Torpedoes, let's do a Scout!! A New-era, Old-school Scout knife!

3 5/8", safety Can opener, Caplifter/screwdriver, Awl/punch, and Spear main.
Back to our tradition of a new pattern (triple-P etch - Pertinux would approve!) for the Forum!
Many - a majority - of post-war Scouts had synthetic handles, and they are the least expensive, and ironically the toughest, so lets do Micarta! I can hear the gasps as I utter the M-word!!

We can decide;
A) the color - it would be jigged - more gasps!
B) a shield
C) bail (costly) or no bail

I am fully prepared to be shouted down, booed, or booted from the forum, especially when we go significantly over the past $100 limit I have aimed for in the past .

What Say You????

Scout knives are great, would love to see that.
I would be all in on a scout knife, but I do understand Bill's reservations related to the cost and complexity of production, especially if it would be the forum knife with production numbers in the 2-300 range.

I specifically did not suggest a Scout due to the work, complexity, and expense associated with creating it, but would love a forum scout knife!

:D I'm in for at least 2!

Especially with a bail!! :D

It would be an amazing compliment with the other "upcoming" large scout knife!

I'd be on board with a scout knife! I've got a few SAKs, but one that hails back to my Scout days would be awesome! And I'm totally game for the micarta too.

Also, trying to not be out of line:

I believe we all understand the monumental task involved with taking orders and shipping the forum knives. And, we all understand that it costs a good deal of money to successfully run any business. The work Barry did for us was surely a significant loss.

Can we add on a "processing & handling fee" to help offset those costs? It only seems reasonable, but that's just my opinion.

Charlie, I absolutely love the idea of a scout. The scout pattern is simply hard to beat for usefulness and traditional feel. I love micarta handles. I love pretty much everything about your proposal. I would love to be able to pick up a GEC scout.

Of course I always wish that it could be less expensive, but for me one of the best things about a forum knife is that the community aspect helps me feel justified in laying out the money.

If this knife happens this year, I am absolutely in for a scout.

Edited to Add: Also, in the spirit of expressing our desires, I would want a bail.

Two scout SFOs from you this year?! That's awesome. I haven't been buying many traditionals lately, but 2016 might be an awesome year.

I think jigged micarta would be awesome. Camo might be cool, as it goes with the theme of the pattern and isn't too gaudy in micarta form. I'd be okay with or without a bail.

I also totally understand Mr. Howard's concerns.

3-5/8" - check
Many uses - check
Different than the other forum knives - check
Jigged micarta, green canvas!? - check

I don't see any reason to say no to this one! And I agree with a post above about adding in a handling charge. No one likes to work for free and when you really think about the process of receiving the knives and then mailing them all out, it's a lot of work.

I don't think you are out of line at all. We did add a fee. In the spirit of keeping the price down we didn't add enough!

After all your sterling efforts over the past couple of years, I'm slightly surprised that you don't want a rest this year Charlie, you've certainly earned it, but your commitment to this forum seems to know no bounds! The forum knife becomes a bigger project every year, and the effort of mailing them out is a major job in itself. Can a team be put together to help with this?

A multi-bladed knife certainly wouldn't be my first choice, partly because of costs, and partly because I share Bill Howard's concerns - they'd be producing large numbers of a complex knife pattern for users with above average expectations, (personally I'm of the school that says a multi-bladed knife with blade rub is a piece of bad cuttlin' rather than inevitable). However, you have the Midas touch my friend, and haven't sold us a bum pony yet!

Two questions; steel (1095 would do for me), and can someone show us some jigged micarta?

You're a star Charlie

I also think it would be fair to add a financial incentive, I'm sure we won't get fleeced, and it'll be money well spent

You've been the Captain of this ship for a few years now, Charlie. As long as it's agreeable with the powers that be, it sounds like something worth investigating and if possible moving forward with.

that 2014 bladeforums knife is my favorite! i love it so much i bought 3! well on the for sale forum

I think a Scout pattern for the 2016 Forum knife is a great idea. If a 4 blade is expensive and difficult to produce would a 3 blade scout be significantly easier and less expensive to produce yet still desirable? Just a thought.
