What the heck? Does Cold Steel not own a ruler?

I can't say I have ever taken out a ruler to verify if my blades are 3.9 inches or 4.0 after this thread I still will not.
It will be ok guys, I don't think they did it to cheat you.

If you live in a state where cops are busting out rulers to measure your pocket knife, leave that state at once and never return.

Once you start carrying the xls you won't miss that 1/8" at all.

Amen. I carry an xl voyager almost all of the time and I just know it's big enough for any task where a knife is needed. 3.8" and 4"? Hard to tell the difference. I understand why they would round up though, makes sense pertaining to law enforcement especially bc CS targets sd minded folks who don't stress about an eighth of an inch not being on the blade as advertised. I know I don't. Those same folks may however be concerned with legality so rounding up a little bit is a good thing. To me there's a small, medium and large size to most of their folders.

Response from the manuacturer about a simple question:

You asked a question, and got an answer from the President of the company.
Then it descended into name calling and trolling...

I'm still pretty new to BF, and I rarely venture outside the CS subforum. I was hoping to free up more time to spend engaging with the rest of the community and trying to answer questions and comments on other threads.
This kind of response makes me think that time might be sadly wasted
What a shame

Accountability goes both ways.

HOWEVER - While reading this thread, Lynn discovered that the Broken Skull was indeed longer than advertised.

Um. The Broken Skull has been out for months and many people have mentioned that the blade is over 4 inches (from the tip to the nearest point on the handle, not the farthest like they now claim to measure) and only NOW Lynn notices that?

I don't recall where the particular San Mai thread(s) is/are. Could you post a link so I may peruse again and reacquaint myself with them?

exactly.

To clarify - We measure the longest possible distance that can be defined as "blade". Not cutting edge.

That really doesn't clarify things much. "From where to where" would, so we are all playing on the same page. Like "On a folder from the tip to where the scales begin."

Seems like we have been down this road before with other manufacturers. Here's some unsolicited advice:

Deciding if someone is trolling is up to the mods of this particular forum to decide.
And if you want to "engage with the rest of the community" (which would be great ), then you are going to have to deal with folks who aren't fans of your product.

I just checked my Mini Recon and it measures 2.85" or so, not 3". Well, that never bothered me. I would rather it be a tad under than a bit over.

It varies from knife to knife. We will measure the longest distance possible on the blade. The curve of the handle etc. is different on every design.

Thanks for your feedback and advice.
I'm not a member of the customer services team. I volunteered to be a part of BF because I want Cold Steel to engage more with this community.
I've been trying to free up more time to spend outside our small sub forum.
I don't expect everyone to be a fan and I have no problem with polite criticism. I'm also happy to pass ideas, suggestions and feedback to management and R&D.
I just don't like seeing the endless Lynn-bashing. I work with the guy every day. I've known him for nearly 15 years now. No one likes to see people they know get trashed on the internet.
I apologize. Mods, I am sorry if my response was out of line. I'll take a deep breath before posting in future. :D

Getting back to the thread. I hope that I was able to clarify how we measure our blades and how that relates to blade length versus cutting edge length.

No problem here, when I measure my CS Panga Machete I will have to round up anyways, to take into account the chunks missing out of the front of the blade. Dang banana plants :foot:

Sorry guys, I must take the blame on this issue. Since i designed and prototyped all the tri ad models except one. While we do shoot for " worst case " measuring. Usually from concept to prototype to preproduction to production run changes are made sometimes. However the sizes listed should be considered nominal. (as with almost everything else in the world) Hope this helps.

Makes sense for people with cops watching for knives just like when cops are catching people who speed on a known road it's safer to drive mile or two an hour under than to think you're right perfect and be over by their measurement

Has anyone ever been arrested, fined, or even had their knife confiscated solely on the basis of a blade being measured?

Until specific cases are pointed out, I think we are talking about riding on unicorns here...

Personally I am always happy if the blade is longer than advertised, and unhappy if it is shorter. A shorter blade means the worker missed his grind, then had to resort to a heavy re-grinding to sort things out, which means more likelihood that the edge temper will be all burned to hell...

Oh, and the One Piece range from Chris Reeve have all the bigger models advertised as 9", but they are all in fact 8.75". This is not an accident or a rarity, since the leather sheath is made to fit this precisely... It is consistently like that, and to me it feels quite rotten, as 1/4" is a lot, even on a big knife like my Jereboam Mk II.

Here in CT, you can't carry a knife where the edged portion of the blade is 4 inches or more (unless you are actively hunting or fishing). It's a lot tougher to find what the edged length or knives are. Maybe knife length is like the speed limit- who gets pulled over for going just a few miles over? Until that time you do get pulled over. I like obeying the laws.

Looking at the OP's pic, it looks like the CS Recon one is a little under a 4" edge length- that's one that I liked, but was worried wouldn't be legal here. It would be nice if blade length didn't matter in this state, but it is what it is.
