What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Are you loosening up the tension of the back spring? I've got that same Gitano, and while I love it, goddamn the pull on it has to be at least a 9. Full on gator snap. That's one of the rare few slipjoints I own that scares the heck outta me when closing it LOL
No. I like it tough, but I bet I could shave a little material for a lighter pull, either from the inside of the backspring itself, or just reduce the depth of the lug that the blade has to overcome. Or maybe round the lug edges a bit. That might be easiest. But I’m only making new grip scales for it. I’ve never liked the belt clip, and I think the green micarta is a bit boring. I have some Chakte Kok leftover from a previous project that’s super nice to work with.

You found a really good knife right there. The Catt Carpenters Whittler is one of my favorites to own or carry. I have three in that same configuration. The one you got is an early version too.😍
Should be stamped 32879 on the back of the main. 😊
Thanks, Mr P. It's a bit worn and used with a fair amount of pitting on the blades. I just got some magnification on the tang and the pattern no. stamp is completely missing.
The blades sure look like they were heavily buffed at some time in its life and the tang at the back of the main blade looks to have been ground down a fair amount?
The Cattaraugus Little Valley stamps on the front of all three blades are still legible.
I feel lucky to have found it though, I drool every time I see a pic of yours. The bone, shield, pattern and sleeveboard shape were more than I could resist. :):)

Thanks! I had to google Chakte Kok, as I'd never heard of it, but wow that's some gorgeous looking wood. Your Gitano is gonna look amazing with those new red scales. Please post up pictures here when you've finished it, I'd love to get a look. I like a tough pull as well, but I definitely say a little prayer to the 'half stop' gods when I close my Gitano one-handed with my right thumb, as in "half stop, please don't fail me now!" haha

Will do! And I know what you mean. That half-stop requires faith. Chakte Kok is $50/ft here so I only bought a small piece to try my hand at handles. Figured Mora blanks were an easy way to get started. I only have a little left and the Gitano was looking at me so here we are.

Absolutely beautiful! I'm psyched to see how the Gitano comes out, it's gonna be so awesome :)

On the positive side ......... it has some fine looking bone (including color), tight to the bolsters, appears to have all hammered pins, plus the Indian Trail jigging, plus the shield is in nice alignment.
I think it was a popular model for Cattaraugus. I think yours has to be nearly one hundred or older. I hope it has nice snap on all the blades (most Catts do) and that you give it some pocket time. It is really nice to see someone else post such a fine looking Carpenter's Whittler. Oops .............. now who's drooling ?     😍😍🤣

32879 is absolutely the model number for that knife ..... doesn't matter if the number disappeared with age or it might have never been on there to begin with. ;)

Stunning ! 😊 Just think of the stories it could tell if knives could talk. ;)

IMHO there is no better Jigged Bone than what the Old Catts had . The worm grooves , or Indian Trails as Cattaraugus called them , just add to it . You now have started down the Old Catt Hole my friend . Welcome to the club !!!!!

Thank you very much JJ, that's the first I've seen Jaws for decades, it really made a big splash when it came out didn't it, must have been hard to avoid it?! :D I think my sister went to see it about 15 times! 🤣
When I finally saw it I bought the DVD! My favorite in that show was the late, great Robert Shaw.
Vive La France! :cool:Wonderful pair of Gallic slicers JJ :)
Thank you very much, Jack!!! :)
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend :)

Two stupendous slicers for single blade Saturday, made even cooler with a sweet treat and some fun shooting! 😃👍👍

Yes indeed, good company to hang with. Thanks, Jack.

I really enjoyed the day Harry and the chance to get a hands on look at the fine knives you and the others brought. I'd ride the river with that group too, although that fella on the far right in the pic looks a bit shady. :)
Did you per chance read Lamour's series on the Sacketts ????

Harry

I've been fiddle fussing with sitflyers Frankenknife that he gifted me
Removed the pocket clip because let's be honest she is way too thick to pocket carry. I did remove the lanyard cause I just...wanted to keep things simple

She is an old bucklite 112 handle rebladed with a drop point 442 blade

He gifted it to me for use as a work knife. And I am strongly considering utilizing it for just that
3 straight days of 82-85° with relatively high humidity especially for this early in the year has my stag 48 rusting in my pocket :/

Thank you for your kind words, Bob!!! :)

You did a marvelous job giving that handsome and classic Brit some new legs; love those covers!👍
Thank you kindly JJ.

Those beautifully kept scouts make me want to put on a uniform and go camping.

Glad you approve of the Woodsman, Jack!
Usually, I have very little competition for the knives that suit my …”tastes”😁
That was the very first knife I picked up. I wasn’t sure because it was sheathed, but something made me take a look.
LOL! :D I'm glad you found it my friend :D :)
Superb pic Steve :)
Yes , I have a photo of Most of the guys . I Will Not list their names for fear that somebody who goes into the U.S.P.S. buildings may recognize them . If they want to identify themselves , that would be fine with me . They are all good guys and Forums Contributors and I would " Ride The River " with any of them . That is a saying from the Louis Lamour books by the way .

Great pic Harry :D :) :) I just had to go and check everything was still in my wardrobe! 🤣 ;)
I carried these for our Show & Tell sessions , which mostly happened before and after breakfast at Cracker Barrel .

It was a very nice day for me . I could not stay as longs as I wanted to because of physical reasons , but those young guys stayed longer . It was great to see younger guys getting involved and I thank them all for being there .

Harry
Nice assortment there my friend, and a wonderful gift :)
Thank you very much for helping out on this Jack . I am very happy for it to be older than the 1990's . I am also very happy that the one I found has Bone instead of that Gumfuddy stuff that TEW sometimes used . I doubt that it was ever carried much or even sharpened after it left the factory . I will be changing both of those conditions soon and time .

Harry
TEW seem to have made those knives over a fairly long period Harry, I wonder if they were only ever a contract knife, or otherwise? Reckon there's still plenty of potential research on the pattern. A lot of those knives probably got banged up or lost down coal-mines, I think you got a really nice example
The HHB is showing the ropes to my new trapper.

Nice pairing Tyson :)
I can't say it passed quickly, but it did pass.

Thanks, Jack. The fatter paycheck will be a nice consolation.

Now that I'm home, the old Boker is joined by my frequent weekend carry:

Yeah, I quite often work at weekends, which gives me more time off in the week ;) Nice to see those two together Rachel :)
The single blade spay has to be my favorite find at the show. I was lucky to get some nice ones but this thing just calls to me. Got my beloved damascus lamb ridin with it today.
