What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

I certainly doubt you are alone...and I wouldn't agree with you there. It does of course depend on the pattern and the choice of shield but shields are an interesting & rich feature of American Traditional knives in particular. GEC has certainly been active in reviving the use of many beautiful shields. Ironically, they've also funked out on putting shields on their Stag knives for quite a few years now  and they've come up with a few like guitar/banana shields that I find really appalling & kitsch. But, at least we are all different- thankfully.;)
I agree with that the pattern of the knife can be a deciding factor on using a shield. I recently had a custom Kroo made and Willem asked if I wanted a shield on the knife. Since it was a barlow I went without one. He agreed that traditional barlows for the most part don’t have shields. Imho it turned out beautifully. 😀

Oldest daughter and I are headed to Wyoming hunting tomorrow. This is what I will be caring during the week and most likely on the drive tomorrow. You’ll just have to stay tuned to see what other knives I bring along….IMG_0523.jpeg

Your Barlow did turn out beautiful . I believe the reason that Barlows did not have shields is because , for the most part , the Bolsters had a Stamp on them that people recognized . Sort of like a Logo . There also was the issue of not having a lot room left on the handle . There were some Bulldog Barlows made that did have a small shield on them and so did my S&M .

One or both of these two, (along with a lamb of course), will be my carry for this month.

Can’t go wrong with either of those, Todd.

Not sure I’ve seen that one before or not Dan, but even if I have it bears repeating that that is an absolutely stunning knife Willem made for you.

Thanks Harry! I’m considering having the bolsters engraved on mine but haven’t been able to figure out what I want. 🤷

Jon, "thoughtful" is an apt description of Chris 321Bandaid 321Bandaid !:cool: Last week he sent me this Case chestnut jigged bone CV trapper to add to several other Case chestnut jigged folders I've acquired over the years. Muchas gracias, Chris!:cool::thumbsup:

This makes my day! Great call Chris 321Bandaid 321Bandaid ! Chestnut is a great add for GT’s fine collection.

That 83 is a cool lockback, Chris!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Did you mention that you're making/getting a lanyard for it?
Yessir! Long overdue, but I finally found some leather I think will match quite well. Coming soon...👍🏻

My 83 is without a doubt my favorite "small" knife. It's plenty big enough for most of my daily tasks and doesn't offend. Although it's much smaller, it has the same great feel to it as my 73. It just "feels good".

It seems that there are a couple of trolls who have been leaving 😡 responses to a lot of posts. I’m always wary of folks who block their profiles. 🧐
There not from canada,I checked there names against the ones in our canadian phone book.unless newly arrived assylum seekers.

You made the right call there, in all ways. As Harry points out, Barlows are very much better minus the shield as they may have a stamped bolster, plus their proportions . Sodbusters generally work better without shields when they're synthetic or wood, bone or stag can carry it off however. Engrave that bolster? Not too sure about that...could look over fussy as the bolster is nicely turned and has a Rat-Tail, very fine piece as it is
